My MacBook Pro won't charge after a lightning strike just outside ..

I had a lightning strike just outside my room where I had my Macbook Pro on charge. I soon discovered that while the Macbook was still functioning fine, it was no longer charging, and there was no charger light on. Now after normal use and time, my Mac has gradually decreased to 0% charge and will no longer turn on. I've tried another known working charger - still without successful charging.

I'm tempted to find on eBay a new mag-safe socket port and circuit, install and see if it fixes..

However, any specific advice or suggestions on what would fail and need replacement? Thank you.

Well, I can conclude with logic, your laptop cannot have been affected by lightning unless it hit your laptop directly or charging cable.

If you think your macbook received an overvoltage due to lightning (which is kinda impossible but hey), then I suggest replacing the components.

But first try different adapters and see if it charges at all, as your laptop might not charge because lightning disabled electricity in your house.

Dear Lena,

I'm afraid your logic is incorrect in this circumstance, but hey, as others have said, lightning does strange things..

I was in my room with the Macbook on, when I saw the lightning bolt strike the tree and run down the trunk into the ground, just 5 meters outside my window.. My Macbook was not the only item to fail after this incident, oddly enough the AppleTV also stopped working (on the other side of the house), along with the Cable Modem and an electronic chip programmer device I use, almost all on different house circuits. Only one of the house's circuit breakers activated, but this seemed to have not saved the computer.

And yes I have tried different and verified good chargers, and none fix the situation.

Actually, I bet the electrical devices failed because the lightning surge went up theough the GROUND wire ... in any other situation it would be completely unexpected, but makes logical sense in this circumstance.

Hi, could you solve your problem? Something very similar happened to me and I would like to know a solution ...

Lightning hits do strange things to computers. The mag-safe adapter is just not a replacement for a UPS battery backup. It weakens the whole system sometimes and will cause cascading failures as a result. You replace one part and the next part fails.

If it were me I would call Apple and send it in for a "Flat Rate Depot Repair". Apple will do this as long as it has not received physical damage, like from a drop, or liquid damage. The cost on this with tax and shipping runs $357 in Texas. Total time with FedEx overnight shipping is four days.

This takes the problem out of your hands and gives you a machine (probably with a new logic board) and about a 60 or 90 day warranty. I would mention the lightning hit.

To contact Apple for this service call 1=800- MYAPPLE.

Hi mayer,

Thanks for your feedback. Firstly, I'm based in Sydney Australia, and I have taken the Macbook back to an Apple store for diagnostics. They opened it up and did a quick check, but confirmed that they could not help easily as there was evidence of 'water damage' / or rather that the water indicators had activated... This stumped me for a while, as there was no water present at the time of the failure / lightning strike outside my room, and my computer had been running perfectly until then. Thinking back it was likely due to putting my Macbook through hard work, it was getting very hot (also during hot weather) and I placed it on top of an icepack.. This, while admittedly quite careless, probably caused minor condensation inside the base of the computer... as I said, this didn't cause a problem other than possibly being the cause for activating the water damage indicators.

So I will seek other solutions than Apple repair.

I would almost say try that first. If not, then it could be a board related issue in the charging circuit. I'd almost recommend you to take it to a board repair specialist first such as the one in my bio. Usually something is blown out, but lightning damage can be tricky.

Thanks Brady8812, I'll proceed with swapping out the charging port and associated circuit and see how that goes. Hopefully it won't create a domino effect of failures.

@brady8812 I'd like to ask you a couple of questions about your board level repair services. My email link is posted on my profile. Shoot me a line, please.

Sent email wondered if you got it yet?
