Why am I getting 'glittery' screen artifacts on my display?

Hi guys,

I'm getting some interesting screen artifacts on darker colours on my rMBP display (Late 2013, 750M model). It's not noticable on light backgrounds, but as the background gets darker, it appears these pixels are not fully working, and are partially lit in some cases.

Here's a link to a photo that shows what this looks like:

It's only on the lower half of the display currently, mainly in the middle slightly to the right of center, and is not on the upper portion of the display at all. The effect is less noticeable when the machine has been sleeping or off for a while and gradually gets worse.

Does anyone know what would cause this issue, or better, how to fix it?

Well what you could try (I don't know if this is possible on a Mac though as I'm a windows user) is to reinstall the graphics driver, I would say it's either something with the screen itself or the graphics card/driver causing the issue but I'm unsure what it exactly is,

Let's just hope it's not the graphics card failing, as that is very expensive to replace in the first place and you'd be better off buying a new MacBook if that's the case

@spronkey that looks like your display is starting to fail. You can always double check by connecting an external monitor and see if that will display the same errors. Ultimately it appears that this is an LCD error. MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Late 2013のディスプレイアセンブリの交換

Yeah, no artifacts on external displays. The artifacting is the same with external vs internal GPU as well, so I'm guessing it's either cable or LCD itself :( Thanks

Only thing you can try is a new screen to rule it out. If not, the CPU on your logic board is failing and you're sol.

Updating my original question - the MacBook Pro in question is still in daily use, and still has these artifacts on the laptop LCD only (no external displays). They are slowly getting worse and covering more and more of the display, but are only visible in darker areas.

They appear to be heat related, as they are worse on hotter days, or when the computer has been under heavy load. I believe it may have something to do with the exhaust from the fans hitting the bottom of the display.

Ultimately, the display is still usable (especially as a secondary display which it is being used as at the moment), but it does appear to just be a partially failing display.
