I reset the SMC and swapped out a new battery and I still see the X. Additionally, when I opened the case, this fastener was rattling around,

The loose part is a press fit stand off used on the logic board to mount the fan to or the heatsink.
From the looks of it I suspect someone put in the wrong screw as the bottom is pushed through.
As to why your battery is having troubles I suspect the loose mount shorted something and you still might have a piece floating around inside (pushed through plug).

So I'm assuming the mac is not recognizing the battery, there could be alot of things wrong, lets try basic troubleshooting first, does the mag safe charger indicate the battery is there? It would be an amber light on the charger if so, but a green if not. Also, can you use the mac without the charger even though there is no battery recognized? If you can, it is probably a software issue, if not, maybe a hardware issue. If I can get these answers, I can probably find a solution.
