Password recovery/factory reset questions

So my friend did some things to my phone and I couldn't make or receive calls. So I finally just did a factory reset on it yesterday. Then it asked me for my passcode...I hadn't put a new passcode on it so everything I tried wouldn't work. So today I tried doing it again but, it's making me put my password in to turn it off as well. So I held the power, home and volume up buttons and it's now doing a download of a custom OS.... I really don't know what to do now I'm totally locked out of my phone. I'm using a phone my friend left here to do this and try to find out some info that may help without having to go to a T-Mobile store because I've had issues with the sales people in the stores before, but I just don't know what else to do. Can you please assist me in any way at all?? If so u would greatly appreciate it.
