Only shows 1% battery after screen replacement

Title says it all. First time seeing this with an 8 or 7. The phone was working fine (as best I know) with the cracked screen and was around 50% battery. After screen repair, the battery percentage stays at 1% (Even with a new battery with full charge). There is no visible damage to any board components. The phone was powered off and the battery was unplugged before unplugging anything else. When plugged in, the phone detects it was plugged in but never shows the charging symbol. The phone pulls up fine in a computer. While plugged in, it seems to reboot pretty often (every couple of minutes). The phone stayed on overnight without issue while unplugged while still only showing 1% battery. The phone also doesn't seem to go into DFU mode. It just reboots every time I try. It will go into recovery mode, but fails a restore with error 9. From recovery and regular mode, the phone will go through the update without issue. This sounds similar to the issue some people had with the 5S after accidentally damaging one of the resistors next to the battery plug, but I wanted to reach out to see if anyone else had seen this issue.

Never found a solution for this as of yet. Tried it with a fully charged battery, got it to finally fully restore, double checked everything on the board (especially around the charging and battery plugs), but no solution from what I could see.

totally solvable--and you're right, this is a batt_swi problem just like on the 5s

Download Coconut Battery on you Mac and install it. Then plug your phone into your computer and open Coconut then go todos Devices and it will tell you all about the battery.

You could not test it before the new screen and even a new battery made no difference. If the Date/Time suggestion above does not work, it sounds like whatever caused the screen damage also damaged the logic board. You could have caused some Pry Damage or damaged an FPC connector during your repair.

Could you somehow fully charge a battery (in another 8 ) and then install it in the device? That would help you understand if the problem is charging related or elsewhere. Charging problems are usually related to a Tristar IC being defective or PRY / FPC damage mentioned above.

This can be difficult repair and unless you have the proper equipment or experience, I would recommend that you find a repair shop that can do micro-soldering repairs.

Maybe not the cause of this case, but you might find this handy: This can be caused by a bad connection of the battery, this common with new batteries as the connector flex has to be bended correctly.

This is a problem with the battery data being conveyed to the logic board. In the 5s, the BATT_SWI line went through a commonly knocked off filter to cause this problem, and here on the 8/8p/X the battery data has been reconfigured as an HDQ interface that goes through two small mosfets and then the tigris chip passes it to CPU. Your MOST likely problem if this happened at a screen chance is pry damage—knocking off the mosfet or damage to the battery connector or battery itself. Any microsolderer can help you fix this.

I had the same problem so I just took off the screen and disconnected and then reconnected the battery connector and it just worked.

next to the battery connector is a small chip that controls power. it often breaks when you hit it with your hand or tool because it is so small. you have to either solder it back on or put a new one on it. otherwise it always stays at 1%

the chip is called battery IC or charging IC
