Where is pinch point on display cable?

MacBook Pro 17" last four digits of the S/N: YX63. Display has problem described in several questions on the answer board, i.e. display lower half is muti-hued & non responsive sometimes. It is a frequent problem that comes and goes. Pressure on left side of screen or a slight rap on the display often cures it for a while. The display appears fine on a remote screen even when MacBook screen is half blank.

When top of MacBook is removed and hooked up without hinges connected everything works fine. This indicates that screen cable is somehow being pinched or otherwise affected when assembled. How do I find the pinch point and correct this problem?

Update

Correction on the S/N the last four digits are: YX6C

Apple MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.33 17" Specs

Identifiers: Late 2006 - MA611LL/A - MacBookPro2,1 - A1212 - N/A

The question is who's going to stick their neck out to answer this one first? ;-)

Thanks for the input.

Since the earlier description I did install the screen on the top outer case and set it up off the MacBook. Occasional screen lines appeared but not to the extent or duration as before disassembling. So I believe the cable is the problem and it is more likely in the connectors than in the cable itself. So I will order a new cable.

Until then I have reassembled the MacBook and it is performing well. I can still get artifacts by squeezing the bezel but for the most part as long as it sits on the desk without moving it it is functional. But why have a MacBook if you have to leave it on the desk.

Again thanks and I will mark the question answered.

Thank you for your wonderful detailed description of what this is doing that it should not be doing, but it does. Furthermore I thank you for telling us what steps you have taken to resolve the problem. I can tell that you are a relatively educated and intelligent person that has made an earnest attempt at resolving this, without assistance. The only logical problematic area is where the cable flexes in the hinge area between the top and bottom half of the clam shell. I know you have considered this and looked at this area intently, possibly to the point of frustration. There is a small break or crack in one of the small wires in the video cable.MacBook Pro 17" Models A1151 A1212 A1229 and A1261 Display Data Cable Replacement You may or may not find it with a magnifying glass. But it is there. With electricity things are either connected or they are not. Pinching has no affect on a wire that has not been compromised. You need to replace your video cable.

what ribbon cable?

Please Note: Electricity is either flowing or it is not. The only way a pinched cable, that is good, can affect the circuit is by putting excessive stress on the cable connections on one or both of the ends. Thus pulling the cable out or pushing it into one of the connectors.

+ would you sat a good place to look would would be at the junction of where the cable would flex in step #16? If that was moved with the display disconnected from the body do you think it would confirm the symptoms?

さんによる

Yes mayer, but, wouldn't that indicate an internal break at that point?

Of course, that's what I was trying to say. I think you're absolutely correct.

im having the same issue at the moment with a 15" pro 2006. screen is completely white which means its not the lcd, streams image to a external monitor which means its not the video card, and at times when i play with the screen it will cut in and out which leads me to believe that it is the display ribbon. I work in the computer repair business (although not on Macs) and this is the only thing i came up with. I have a friend that is a Mac genius for Apple and he thinks im right about the ribbon needing either re-seated properly or replaced. Im always open to new ideas if anyone has one. if not i hope this helps someone.

Tim - I think you nail it here. As you use the system the flexing of the cable will over time breakdown so it's not uncommon on these older systems to have this problem (any laptop faces the same problem).
