Have you checked in Device Manager to view the status of the Network (LAN) and Wireless (WLAN) adapters to make sure that they are functioning correctly?
Have you tried starting the laptop in 'safe mode with networking' to see if you can connect OK? If you can then a 3rd part program may be the problem e.g. your A/V or Firewall perhaps.

whats the history of the device? did you drop it recently? spill anything on it EVER?

Not that I recall of. Simply an old laptop placed on the side barely used. Recently took it out to use again because my usual laptop burnt out.
