How to start an iPhone without battery?

Hi,

I have a problem with an old 3GS. The battery is dead and I can't start it. It turned off one day and since then I didn't used it any more because I bought another one. But, I didn't throw away because I have some photos I want to recover. I've tried also connecting to iTunes but without success. So, I decided to buy another battery to replace the old one (not the original one any more) so I can start it and recover the photos. I've replaced the battery successfully but .... when I've turned it on I felt that the battery is was warm and when the phone starts the battery was at 15% an then in 2-3 min drain completely. Since then is in the same situation like before replacing the battery (phone is dead).

Now, my questions are:

1. Should I try another battery? Maybe the one I bought was a wrong model (616-0435). Like I said, the old battery was not the original one (616-0432), I saw after I've opened the phone. How do I know which battery model is good for my iPhone?

2. How can I start the iPhone without battery? I want only to recover the photos, I don't want to use the phone any more.

Thank you for any advice, tips, help.

It is probably best to just use the battery with it on charge, yes it will get hot cause its aged over the years as they don't make new batteries for the 3GS, so I think it would be okay to just keep it on charge while you take off your photos/videos etc with itunes.

I forgot to mention that when I saw that the battery goes down very fast from 15%, I've connected immediately the charger. The charging sign appeared but even so, the battery discharged in less than one minute (I saw when it was at 11% and then 8% and then died).

My feeling it was like the phone drain the battery very very fast and the charger had no effect. Couldn't charge it.

So, you say to try again with a new battery. To connect immediately the phone to the itunes and to hope that in 1-2 min I will succeed copying the photos until the phone dies again.

I know this post is almost 3 years old, but have you tried with a fast/quick/high-speed charger?

i would put the old battery to a Variable power supply set to 5.5V, and pump some current into the battery. this will excite the battery and USUALLY allow it to charge.

over time the Lith-Ion batteries become stagnent and this can fix that. Usuall takes no longer than a few minutes.

be warned, if the battery is bad, it can cause damage to the battery, or self.

I bought a new battery, this time a model 616-0433 which seems to be the correct model compatible with 3GS. I've checked also the voltage and seems to be ok.

But the problem now is that the phone does not start any more. I think the previous battery did something wrong with the phone and broke something. I don't know what to check. And I want only to recover some pictures :(((( I don't think now is possible any more :( I'm so sad! I don't know what should I do now to fix it!!! Please help!

do you have access to the power supply?

The short answer is no, I do not have access to a Variable power supply. I have a 5V 3A power supply I've used to revive the 3rd battery (616-0433).

The long answer:

I've tested the 3rd battery with a voltmeter before inserting in the iPhone: 3.7V. I've put the battery in the iPhone and I felt like the motherboard is a little warm; not hot but warm. (The same thing happened and first time when I put the 2nd battery but I didn't pay attention. First time the iPhone started, now it does not start any more.) After I dissembled again, I've tested both batteries ... 0.12V. Then I used the power supply (5V 3A) and connected to the battery for 20-30 sec. Tested again and surprise .... 3.7V. Both batteries the same behavior.

Conclusion: If I put a good battery in the iPhone after 1-2 min the motherboard became warm. The iPhone does not start, does nothing. When I get out the battery and test it, the battery has 0.12V. I can revive the battery with the power supply (5V 3A) and repeat the process.

so what youre saying is, the old, battery and the new battery both work the same, and it is not until the motherboard comes into play, that there is an issue.

This would imply that your motherboard is whats failing, and not the battery. you likely have a short circuit in the board, causing it to drain the batteries.

at this point, i would attempt a motherboard reflow, (Heat the board up to solder melting temperatures, then let it air cool again, and see if that fixes the issue. otherwise, you would need a board replacement to get the device functioning.

Thank you a lot for your support. I'll try this. If this does not work that's it. I won't buy another motherboard for replacement because my intention was and it is only to start it to recover the photos and not to have a functioning device, because it does not worth the investment (I've already invested too much in batteries :) ).

One more question please. I want to understand something. First time when I put the battery the iPhone started, even with the motherboard warm and even if he consumed the battery in 2-3 minutes. But it worked. Now, every time I put back the battery, the motherboard is warm but it does not start any more. Why this? Something damaged first time? Thank you!
