How do I move the SATA disk from one iMac to another.

I would like to move a 1T SATA disk from one iMac to another. The receiver has a 250GB SSD disk installed already. Is it possible? It seems that there are wires missing? (I have it open now)

I want to move the disk because the one/new iMac is an i7 with 2gb video card the other is just an i5 with 1gb video card. It will improve the performance. Can iMac run with the 2 discs? The are both model 2429.

Update (02/17/2018)

No problem with any of them. The i7 was bought with the SSD.

Here is a picture of the i7.

It appears someone has already changed the drive on the i7 as it shipped with a 1TB HDD. First question is are you having racing fan issues on the i7? Is there a temperature sensor cable going from the hard drive to the logic board on both machines?

There is no problems with either of the iMac's.

I have not opened the i5 system yet. Can I move the cables over?

I don't think we are talking about the same machine. Look on the bottom of the stands and see if you have the correct EMC numbers.

さんによる

I have checked that. It says the same. I seem to remember that it was bought with SSD disk from Apple's website.

Here's the IFIXIT guide you'll need to follow: iMac Intel 27インチEMC2429のハードドライブの交換

Thanks but I have seen that. It does not show what you do if the cables are missing for the SATA disk. But I'll open the I5. Perhaps it gives the solution. I hope cables ect. there can be moved. But i will do it tomorrow. It is about to be Saturday night here in Denmark. Thanks for the help. I'll be back tomorrow. Skål ;o)

Your system can support two drives one 3.5" HDD and one 2.5" SSD. It looks like this system was one of the rare SSD models Apple sold. As you can see the main bay is vacant. So yes you can move your HDD over. You'll need to transfer the brackets and cables over.

As for improving performance the drive its self won't improve things that much, your switch to a better CPU will and if you add more RAM more so.

The HDD will allow you to clean off space on the SSD. So you can max it out for Apps and paging scratch space depending on the apps you're using. You'll want to make the SSD your startup drive.

Here's the IFIXIT guide you'll need to reference to hookup the HDD cable onto the logic board. You should find a jumper block on the HDD SATA/power header on the logic board just pop it off and replace it with the cable (Jump to Step32): Installing iMac Intel 27" EMC 2429 Dual Drive Kit (HDD or SSD)

Thanks! So it is possible to have both drives running? Is that what Apple calls FusionDrive?

さんによる

Lets simply this... Your system has three SATA ports (HD, Optical drive & Spare). The spare in most systems is what is used for the SSD either when sold or added.

Apple didn't offer Fusion Drive services with the release of this system's OS release. It was added later with the release of the 2012 model. This system was a prelude to what was to come! But, that doesn't mean you can't create a Fusion Drive in the older models as the truth is any system with two equal speed SATA drives can support it with the supported MacOS release.

Now lets backup here a moment... The concept of a Fusion Drive is to use a smaller SSD with a larger HDD to give the HDD a boost In performance as SSD drive at the time were very expensive. If you look at the Apple Fusion Drives you'll see the SSD drives are small Apple Quietly Made the Fusion Drive Much Smaller.

So does it make sense to use a larger SSD in a Fusion Drive config? 128 GB I think is the largest that makes technical sense otherwise you're not gaining that much with anything larger (wasteful).

So in your case you have a 250 GB drive. I would leave your config as a dual drive setup. Here we are leveraging the SSD as the boot drive and for OS & App storage as well as the swap space these apps tend to need. The HDD is then the core storage of your 'Stuff' Your music, movies, your creations etc... You'll see them as two distinct drives on your desktop.

A Fusion Drive setup will appear as one drive and only the size of your larger HDD. You can't control the files placement the OS manages this. Basically, copying more often used files to the SSD to be loaded from it vs the HDD What is a Fusion Drive.
