2015 MBA Power Issue

I'm having some issues with a macbook air that I'm currently trying to diagnose, I've done all kinds of research with no luck.

The model is A1466, and it's an Early 2015. The EMC is 2925

When this computer is on, it seems to run totally fine. But as soon as you shut it off, it will not turn back on at all. The only way that I've found to get it to turn back on is open it up, unplug the battery, plug it back in, and then plug in the charger. From there it will turn on and work fine. The keyboard works totally fine when it's on, so I know it's not a keyboard issue. I tried using the jump pads to boot it in case it was an issue with the power button, and I ran into the same issue.

When I was originally diagnosing this device, the only diagnostic error that I got was the battery needing to be serviced. I ordered a replacement battery, and I also reinstalled the operating system on the machine (El Capitan).

Neither of these fixed the issue, and now it's giving me 2 different errors:

  • PFM006 - Issue with the SMC
  • PPN001 - Issue with the power management system

As I said, I've checked everywhere and I can't seem to find much info on getting these fixed. I would like to repair it in house if possible, as opposed to just sending the unit to Apple.

I can do some soldering work if needed, I just need info on what to replace or check for. I have pulled the board from the machine, and I'm not seeing anything that is burnt or looks damaged. This computer has no signs of water damage at all.

Any help is appreciated, if I'm able to find any more info I'll update this thread for others to see!

I had the PFM006 error, too. Fans were rotating at maximum speed, process “kernel_task” was around 500%. It also happened after a battery replacement.

The trackpad cable had a very small damage. Therefore, its sensor weren’t able to report their status (palm rest, temperature etc.). So, the system thought there was a temperature issue and fired up the fans. But this didn’t help (still no response from the sensors), so the kernel restarted over and over.

After implementing a new Trackpad cable everything returned to normal. “SMC” was just fine all the time - the error code was misleading.

Here's a good reference for the error codes: Apple Diagnostics: Reference codes

PFM006 - There may be an issue with the System Management Controller (SMC).

You'll need to look for some damage around the SMC chip or the chip its self is blown. The dark Blue outlined chip is the SMC (Texas Instruments/Stellaris - LM4FS1EH) & here's a good writeup TI WH System management control

For PPN001 I think you have a typo for it but if the SMC is in trouble I think you need too focus on it first.
