number 6 not working

about 3 weeks ago my number 6 on both the numeric keypad and regular keypad stopped working. everything else is fine how do I fix this?

Hi @lelu ,

Try connecting a USB keyboard and check whether the same thing occurs when using it. This is to prove whether the problem is in the keyboard or not.

What is the model number of the laptop and what OS is installed?

HI Jayeff, thank you so much for responding! I connected a usb keyboard and the 6 works on it. the numeric pad is not working but I may need to turn it on. so what does this tell us? the model number is 15-1039wm and I believe the operating system is windows 10. I am computer illiterate so any help you can provide would be great. thank you

Hi @lelu ,

What it suggests is that the number 6 key function in the keyboard is faulty.

Unfortunately you can cause more problems than you solve when you try to repair a keyboard.

The simplest solution is to replace the keyboard in the laptop.

I assume you meant the model number is I5-f039wm.

If it is, then here is a link to the service manual for your laptop.

Scroll to p.38 to view the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedure to remove the keyboard.

Also on p.38 you will find the part number(s) for the keyboard. Select the part number appropriate to your location (or laptop - usually the part number is printed on the underside of the keyboard, if you aren't sure) and then search online using the part number only in the search box, to find suppliers of the part. They are not that expensive.

If it all seems too daunting, contact a reputable, professional laptop repair service and ask for a quote to replace the keyboard. You will already know the cost of the replacement part. ;-)
