Is this a backlight issue and can the backlight be replaced alone?

This tablet was in an otterbox on a bed when someone stepped (or jumped on it). It now has dark areas in two opposing corners. The dark areas are outlined by brighter areas. The outer screen glass is NOT cracked at all. The entire picture shows cleanly in all areas, but is darker in those corners. Touch sensitivity still works perfectly, even in the areas that are dark.

Is this a backlight issue? Can the backlight be replaced/repaired alone or must I replace the entire LCD/digitizer assembly? I am not sure that we will actually do this repair as we can see the screen and it totally works, It is just a reminder to a certain kiddo of the error of his ways. :) (But if it is a cheap and relatively easy fix, we will do it).

I would try a new LCD. Go to a repair shop that has free diagnosis or ask them for a cracked but working LCD. The displays for these older tablets are very cheap. Give it a shot. Let me know what happens.
