Micro USB damaged, any replacement or fix?

I have 1TB 2.5 external HD from WD elements. the micro USB port has been damaged, hence the HD is not getting detected properly in my pc or laptop. All my data is in the HD.

P/N : WDBABV0010BBK-00

Is it possible to connect this HD with anyother port. I see only the micro usb port. am not sure about other port. attached the screen shot my HD for better understanding of the internal design of HD.

if anyone can help to extract data by any means it will be helpfull.

Thanks.

Hi Jagan,

Did you every manage to fix your drive?

I too have a WDBABV0010BBK-00 with the micro USB connector. Mine recently wigged out, (I accidentally dropped it)

I opened it up hoping to find a standard SATA connection, but only found the 12-pin connection. Were you able to connect it via the 12-pin?

I looked at your pics, and I have exactly the same drive as you. (I bought it on black Friday when target was selling it for super cheap)

I want to get my data back, the guys at best buy wants to charge $250, just to send it off to "hopefully" get it recovered.

Any insight is greatly appreciated. I'm not super tech savvy, so the link which requires the removal of the 12 pin is way beyond my skill level.

Thanks

billy

I had a WD MyBook go down. The board fried. I bought an identical one and switched the internal drives and got my data off. The drive was under warranty but I would have lost all my data if I had just taken it back. I did return the drive after my data was safe.

You may also be able to put your drive in an external exclosure.

Hi Mayer

thanks for the reply.

unfortunately my HD is connected with the board, which is not like plug or port connection, it's attached with the circuit board. if you check the WD Element 1TB HD design you can understand.

i tried my level best to take this off but no choice.

Well WD really made this one to work just one way. First are you sure the USB port is the problem? The only way I know of, outside of trying to repair the port, to get into it would be to buy an identical board and switch them out. Here's a discussion of your drive by some supposed recovery pros (I don't like their attitudes, but maybe you can glean some info. there are 5 pages. I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help on this.

I am going to share 2 links.

They are very helpful and they have the most comprehensive information you need an get when it comes to damaged usb connector on external drives.

It explains clearly what you should do if your data is encrypted or what if your usb is soldered on to the PCB without a SATA connector, etc.

Western Digital external hard drives are wreaking havoc around the globe with their lousy usb connectors.

I had a format problem with the Western Digital 1TB external drive.

I tried to format my WD Elements with Windows 7 format tool. That rendered the hard drive useless. I then downloaded the WD formatting tool for the drive. After running this tool, I got a message… “Format Failed.” Nothing more, and no advise on how to proceed. After some research, I learned that the Mac “Disk Utility” tool might format the drive. I tried this, running into many hours of writing zeroes. That operation halted about half way through.

My computer is a dual boot (Windows 7/Ubuntu 12.04.) I booted to Ubuntu and used that disk utility. I first deleted the partition, then formatted to NTFS. The drive now works as it should.
