Hi @macsba ,

Has it worked before on your printer?

If you haven't tried before then have you selected the correct media in printer preferences > paper quality > media settings area? If cardstock is not listed, select a type that is similar e.g index card or brochure etc, so that the printer is "expecting" thick paper

Here is a list of the card sizes supported by your printer, when the cards are loaded into Tray 1.

Index card (76.2 x 127 mm; 3 x 5 inches)

Index card (102 x 152 mm; 4 x 6 inches)

Index card (127 x 203 mm; 5 x 8 inches)

A6 card (105 x 148.5 mm; 4.13 x 5.83 inches)*

A4 index card (210 x 297 mm; 8.3 x 11.7 inches)

Hagaki (100 x 148 mm; 3.9 x 5.8 inches) * **

Ofuku Hagaki** (200 x 148 mm; 7.8 x 5.8 inches)

Index Card Letter (216 x 279 mm; 8.5 x 11 inches)

Update (12/26/2017)

Hi @macsba ,

The computer "informs" the printer about all the preferences that you have selected before and during the printing process.

Are you using the appropriate to your OS HP drivers (click on selected operating system - Change to select appropriate OS) or the generic Mac HP printer drivers?

The only thing that you should have to do in the printer is ensure that the cardstock media is inserted print-side down in the center of tray #1 and also make sure the stack of media aligns with the line on the width guide, and is not higher than the paper stack line on the guide.

Here is a link to the User Guide for your printer. Scroll down to p.26 to view how to insert the paper in the tray. (It is the same for cardstock as it is for photo paper)

The printer setting in my Mac does have cardstock selection but there is nothing for me to set for cardstock media in the printer itself.

It never worked for printing on cardstock in the past.

The last size in your listing is the one I'm trying to use.

Hope this helps you.

Hello jayeff;

Your answer below made me research what version driver I had installed. Seems like the drivers supplied by Apple was lacking. I now have the update drivers installed and now can print on cardstock. Thank you.

I had the same problem with HP Officejet Pro 8600. There is no "cardstock" setting. I couldn't get it to grab the cardstock. It kept saying paper empty. Make sure the paper cannot slide backwards in the tray. The adjustable back paper holder MUST be snug against the paper. Once I adjusted that I had no problem printing on cardstock.

If you have never tried before, have you chosen the correct media in printer preferences> paper quality> media settings area? If the card stock is not listed, choose a similar type, such as an index card or brochure, etc., so the printer "expects" thick paper.
