Why does my dashboard lights turn off when car headlights are on

The dashboard light dims completely when headlught is turned on. At night I can’t see the speed limit

my dash lights go off when the headlights come on.

I have no dashboard lights and the clock light is on but when I turn on the lights it goes off

Have you tried adjusting the instrument brightness control on the dashboard?

Yes but I did noticed when I accidentally kicked the area where dimness is controlled it came back on. Then at times it would go off again.

If you bumped the area and it came on then goes off it is either a loose connection or a faulty control unit.
