iPhone 7 Plus battery expanding

Hi Guys,

Any help would be much appreciated.

So i changed a iPhone 7 plus battery for a customer about 2 months ago because the battery would drain very quick and the battery had actually expanding so much that it pushed the screen out.

All has been well until today the customer has called me up saying that the battery has expanded again.

Is this because there may be a problem with the software or something else which has caused the battery to expand in such a short period of time? As i know there has been a lot of problems with iOS 11 with battery issues.

Or is it purely because of the battery that was used?

The battery i used was a OEM battery from a very reliable company.

Thanks in advance

UPDATE:

I have changed the battery again for now and will see how it goes, the customer was also using an aftermarket charging plug, so i got him to purchases both a plug and cable off me. So i don't know if the cable or plug does actually affect it but we will wait and see. Will update again.

I would say it's not the software, I can't imagine software doing that.

I would of referred the customer directly to Apple in this case, expanding batteries are normally covered under warranty by Apple, even after 12 months.

I would advise the customer to ring Apple Care and explain the battery has expanded (and of course not saying anything about the repair). It definitely sounds like a faulty iPhone.

Thanks for the reply. Wouldn't Apple want the customer to go in store? and i would imagine they would open the phone up and see the battery had been replaced?

Most likely yes, they would want them to go in store. If you've done a nice enough job, they wouldn't be able to tell it's been replaced, it's worth a try for the customer, and if they refuse service because they can tell it's been replaced, I guess just replace it again yourself..

Charging cables will not cause the battery to swell. The most probable cause is damage to the battery structure during reassembly or the battery cell is inferior.

Ben is saying the cables would cause swelling?

I thought it would but looks like it does not.

the device with a swollen battery usually has Apple replace the device as a safety issue. I have gone in to the Apple store and had no issues. The answers above with the tristar chip being affected is a possibility-Made for apple cables are just what they say they are-gas station cables and chargers cause circuit damage.

I’m having the same problem with my battery swollen. I had a tech guy put in a new OEM battery. But he said it was not charging. he tried like 3 new batteries and it would not charge. So, now I’m using my old swollen battery that still does charge.

I don’t actually have an answer but just want to say that this is the second iPhone 7 plus in my household to have this same problem. Is there any report/findings on this flaw - does it particularly happen to iphone 7 plus? If it’s not the manufacturer’s fault then was it the customer’s usage - and if so are there any tips to avoid having the battery expand this way.

I do notice that both phones with this problem are the ones that we have on standby after getting a newer phones. Is it the lack of activity that causes the battery problem.

Thanks
