New Hard Drive -> Installation takes too long/Drive access too slow

Hi,

i now have the preinstalled hard drive 250,06 GB (Hitachi) in my Mac Book Pro A1286 (Mid 2009 Unibody).

I now want to replace my Hard Drive with the Western Digital Scorpio Black 500 GB/7200rpm.

Now, put it in and format the HD with GUID, MacOS Journaled Extended. All is ok. The installation runs and at ca. 60 percent the Installation seems to "sleep". The installation takes 5 (FIVE!!!) Hours to complete.

If i want to work with OS 10.6, but every access to the HD (open a application, open a finder window), the OS freezes for 5-10 seconds!

Anyone know this strange behavior?

I also tried a Samsung HM640JJ, with the same result (the installation runs >10 hours, so i cancelled it).

Any hints would be welcome!! Thank you!!!

Chris

At the moment do you have the OS installed on the new HD?

Chris after you installed the OS did you go through Software update and update the OS? If you havent please do so. Then reboot the machine and perform A PRAM reset. I had these issues when I upgraded to a 7200 RPM drive..it's working fine now. Another thing Chris...If you are installing via a USB cable to an external drive remember that USB data transfer speeds arent that of SATA or SATA2 so it's gonna take a lot longer to do the installation. Just be patient. I would just put the new drive in the machine and just boot directly into the installation disk and install that way. Way faster

Yes, i gave the HD a partition named "Macintosh HD" formatted MacOS Journaled. Is that ok?

Please excuse me for not being a psychic. Good luck with your problem.

Ah, i read some articles about that issue. Problem is, that the MacBook Pro does not work correctly with 7200rpm drives!

Yes. This advice helps a lot. Sure, the performance fix was released in 2010, after the 10.6 release. So i now will try to install the OS external via USB, then put it in the MacBook Pro and do a Software Update. I hope it will work!

Thanks Majesty!

I don't know if you're still lock at this post but if you do, could you tell me if you were able to install OSX on your machine? I'm in the process of doing the same thing myself. Getting the hard drive ready took me a good 6hrs (750GB). I am now in the process of installing the OS but the progress bar and time don't seem to move. Did this take you a long time as well? Any help would be greatly appreciated it.

It is not possible to use a 7200rpm with the MacBook Pro Mid 2009 Series. Also with 10.6.6 i have problems. I think there is a problem with the SATA Controller. Now i will upgrade to the current MacBook Pro early 2011.

There is no problem with SATA controller nor the cable.

You just need to downgrade EFI to 1.6 to cap the SATA connection to 150 mbps. This EFI also has support for many (or virtually all drives), while EFI 1.7 enables 300 mbps (no difference when using HDD) but at the same time removes support for nearly all non-Apple supplied drives.
