Device won't power on, not recognized via USB either...

A friend of mine gave me their iPod touch 2G, hoping I could fix it for them...but I'm having several problems.

Firstly, I also own an iPod Touch 2G which is fully functioning - I've messed around with it a lot and had to restore it several times. I'm not great with 'em but I got the basic knowledge.

The broken iPod isn't on, it's literally a paper weight I've tried everything but it just doesn't react to anything.

So there's two things wrong with this iPod - the power button is jammed. Yeah, it's a pain in the ***...I've tried poking it with a screwdriver to see if I can unjam it. What's the best plan of action in regards to this? I've considered opening it, I'm sure there's a good guide out there, but I was wondering if anyone knew specifically with jammed power buttons if this helps.

Of course this power button issue means I can't get into DFU mode (afaik) but then again this isn't the main problem...

The main problem is the fact that it isn't recognized by any computer. I don't mean it pops up saying "Windows can not recognize this USB device." I mean literally no reaction to a computer. I tried using Device Manager to see if Windows (XP) recognizes it at all, but it doesn't.

I've looked around for some advice on this but there's far too many people posting in a panic and getting flamed...any help's much appreciated.

Oh and it hasn't functioned for months now so it is on a very outdated iOS.

Ethan Herbert, first off, nobody is going to flame anyone here. This site exist to assist and help each other. Also check the ifixit mission statement :-) anyhow....I would start off with repairing what you know is broke. Start with the power button instructions are here and do get a new battery while you are at it. Then see what you get. I do know that you mentioned that there is absolutely no response when you plug your ipod in. Could be a bad dock connector or just a bad cable. The way I go about trouble shooting is to replace or repair the known parts first and see what happens after each step, Good Luck

Thanks for the response. I'm skeptical about it being a bad cable as I own a fully functioning iPod Touch 2G as well, and it charges fine and is picked up by both my computer and iTunes with no difficulties. I'm trying to keep this as cheap as possible so I'll start with the power button, and hope that works. Thanks.

I agree with you. I am kind of frugal (cheap) myself and I do not like to change multiple items at once unless I know that they need to be replaced, otherwise I do one item at the time and check my progress knowing which parts are good. Let us know how you are progressing.

I had this issue with a neighbor's ipod touch 2g 8 gb. It turned out the two of the pins were broke/bent. However, the power button functioned properly. Maybe worth checking out. I had to use a penlight to see the bent pens.

Specifically, here is what happened to this ipod. Since one of the pins was broken (I think it was Pin 23) it would not power and the battery had long since ran out. In all appearances, the Ipod appeared to be bricked. But only the ability to charge the ipod was defective.

The good news is that I was able to re-soilder a replacement doc connector on for only around two bucks. But I got to warn everyone, those pins are really tiny. Hope this may help you or someone else out

What exactly do you mean by pins? I've looked into the charger port, and what I seem to see is similar to the bottom of an old games cartridge, just much smaller.

さんによる

That is a good analogy :-) that is what it is look like bunch of pins that connect through the USB cable, I believe there are 30 total, Sometimes they can bend or overlap depends on how some people remove the cable etc. If you check it with a good magnifier ou may see some damages i.e.broken, bend pins at that connector. That connector, dock connector, can be replaced but it's a PITA. Hope this clarifies it a bit.

It's very dusty in there...what d'ya think would be the safest way to go about cleaning it? I don't have a can of compressed air which I'd normally use for something like this. From what I can see, no pins are damaged, but I'll clean it up and get a better look.
