Which LCD component to replace due to heat damage?

My mom has a Macbook Pro 15" and she was sitting at a desk that had a candle on it. She opened the lid of the MBP and the back of the lid was over the candle.

The LCD now has a dark patch on the screen. The back panel is not damaged and the picture is still clear in the damaged area but there is almost a shadow where the damage is. I don't know much about how LCD's work but to me it looks a little like the light diffuser is damaged. The dark area is about 2" from the right hand side of the screen and right near the top of the screen. The damaged area is about 1.5" by 1" and oval shaped.

What is the best way to diagnose this? Ideally I would just like to replace the damaged component.

Would a photo help or is my description good enough?

Thanks in advance!

Stefan

Your description is fine. I admit I've never seen this problem. To make sure I attempt to give you the correct answer, please give the last three letters of your serial number for positive identification of your book. The newer ones use LEDs not LCDs and I believe that is what you will need to replace, I can't think of anything else that might correct it.

Thanks so much. Will do so when I get home this evening. As far as I remember, she got it in July last year but will post the serial number this evening.

I am new to macs so I hope I am giving the correct serial number. In the System Profiler it gives me *******21G0. Is this what you need?

Apple MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.4 15" (Unibody) Specs

Identifiers: Late 2008/Unibody - MB470LL/A - MacBookPro5,1 - A1286 - 2255

Lokks like this is the part you need: MacBook Pro 15" Unibody (Late 2008 - Late 2011) LCD Panel

Thanks for the reply. That is the correct Macbook Pro. A little worried about doing the repair as it is listed as very difficult. I have pulled apart normal windows laptops before and been able to put them together with no problem but a mac may be quite different. Looked through the tutorial and it didn't look too tricky. WIll have to think about it.

Thanks again for the help!
