Probably one of two issues both dealing with the heat sink.
First you can try replacing the thermal paste.
Second is that the heat sink is liquid filled and can develop a leak (these get very hot), replace the heat sink. Look for an oily reside on the logic board around the crimped ends of the sink.

@mayer Wow, I never knew the heatsinks in these were liquid filled!
@vehiclefreak409 Apple started this around 2008 with the MacPros. Copper is expensive. Copper weights a lot and in laptops they are fighting for fractions of an ounce to keep the weight low.
what liquid is inside the heatsinks?
If you don't have an apple store to go to, or just low on time, here is some apple support regarding heat.
My MBP does get hot too, usually when I'm utilizing the graphics cards high (i.e. HD youtube, certain games).
I have a stand with a fan that I use to assist with the cooling, you can purchase one on Amazon
Good luck

Apple considers this a "legacy machine" obsolete. They won't help you only try to sell you a new one.
I do not disagree with you there.
@ajes green stuff
This is pretty normal in my experience. The more resource heavy applications will make the laptop noticeably warmer. its fine unless its hot enough that it burns you, then you may want to check itout. and yes, the area around the charging port does get warm easily.
