My TV comes on, then switches off, to a flashing RED standby light.

The Sony Bravia Television is a Model KDL 40HX700 - Serial No: 1729469 - Manufactured April 2010 in Malaysia. The set its self is in excellent and has never been dropped or knocked. This has been happening intermittently for the last 6 months.

The following can happen:

The TV can be switch on from either fully off or the Standby state and the Green Light will indicate, and the picture and sound appear, depending on how long it is, before it switches off, and dropping back to a flashing Red Light. This can happen almost immediately or after a period of normal operation lasting up to two to three weeks.

After it has switched off, it will be impossible to Switch On the TV again from Standby to On, for a undefined period of time.

This inability to Switch On the TV at all, may last for anywhere between a couple of hours or a couple of weeks. Then one day out of the blue, having moved or changed nothing, you try again, and it comes on normally and operates normally, for anywhere between just a few minutes, to up to a couple of weeks.

Kind Regards

David Collyer

Hi,

Is there a pattern to the blinking Red Light, e.g. continuous blinking or 3 blinks -pause, 3 blinks pause etc?

Given the age of this unit and the behavior described, I would start with checking the capacitors in the power supply. These may be starting to fail. I suspect that the behavior changes based upon heat. The capacitors may not look like they are the problem. I would check their ESR, but a special meter is required for that. If you can, please post a picture of the power board. There may be obvious damage that can be seen.

It is also possible that there are other causes as well, but I would start with the power board.
