Possible Dead T con board? or is it the Screen?

Hey Guys,

I have a KDL-46W5500 Sony Bravia which has just decided to turn on with lines appearing 10 seconds after power on

.

After some investigation I decided to take the back off and try taking out / putting back in the T Con Board inputs and strips/connectors

Block Image

but to no avail.

I am considering purchasing a new one off Ebay for about $80, but wanted to know if any of you fine gentlemen could advise if you believe replacing the T con board would actually solve my problems or whether you believe it to be the LCD Screen itself.

I did try powering on the tv without the T con connected and the lines didn't appear so I think that is maybe a tick on the replace the t con board list. Any help would be much appreciated. other photos of tv components:

I have Sony Bravia LED 3D TV KDL 43W950D. Sl no. 8526842.

Few days before i,e. on 15/12/2020 in the morning when I was started my tv it was displayed white screen then blinking red 5 times and so on. I have informed to Sony Service station then service engineer came to me on18/12/2020 and open the back cover and clean the dust then tv was o.k. I have given him Rs.1300.00 as a service charge. Next day morning same problem appeared. Again service engineer come to me and open the back cover and done something again tv was restored. Next day again same problem appeared he came to me and put software for update then tv was restored and he told me it was a problem of Tcon board but Sony does not supply only tcon board so I have to purchase full panel and it will cost more then 17 thousand. Next day morning same problem persist. why he try to replaced my tv parts instead of minor repairing? Let me know what is the actual problems.

Hey I probably should have posted earlier. Replaced the main board and after that didn't work, I figured it was the panel and just sucked it up and bought a new TV.

Good news is now I have 2 main boards that I don't need...

Thanks for all the help from the people on this board, I really appreciated it.

LG 50” lcd tv has no sound or video. The screen flashes once briefly then stays black... I’ve replaced a main board and there’s no sign of damage on the power supply. Could it be the t con? I am not so sure considering there’s no sound. Any ideas?

さんによる

46 inch LG, same issues. Tcon replacement fixed it. Electro Parts Online.

In most cases it is neither the panel, nor the T-CON board. It is most likely bad contact of the FPC cables. There's an oxide layer forming on the FPC pads. So even reseating/wiggling them may not fix it and it gives a false impression. Please look for my post below

@joel_h this does not look like a typical T-con board error. This appears more of a video processor error and could originate on your main board. Check that board and see if you notice any obvious damage and check all your cables to ensure they are not tore and are properly seated. After that I'd start by replacing the main board (get it from a place where you can return it in case it is not the fault)

Thanks OldTurkey,

I'll check back in once I have had a look at the main board.

Cheers,

So I have taken a look at the board (my extent of this is literally looking at it) and tried re-seating everything on it. issues is still persisting and I have no way of knowing what is causing the issue.

my only other information is that it appears I have horizontal lines as well as vertical lines, but I doubt this points to anything else?

Is there anything I can do to narrow down the culprit before changing out hardware? (I'm in Australia and anything I can source will not likely be returnable) Thanks again for your help mate.

There is one point that has not come up before not is it visible on your pictures. " I have horizontal lines" is usually an indication that the panel as failed. Horizontal lines are never caused by a bad T-con board. Let me see if this is a common error for your model.

さんによる

what I meant by horizontal is that you can see black horizontal lines. (so the vertical lines aren't actually fully red, they have black lines in them. What I am talking about is visible in the pictures, so if you think I meant actual colored horizontal lines, that's not what I meant.) hopefully that makes sense.

さんによる

the only other thing I am worried about is that it might be the vertical bands. (the ribbon cable strips on the front of the TV) However, I haven't taken the metal exterior off to check these. Do you think this may be the cause?

Does anyone know if it matters if you use a tcon board that has the same layout as the suggested model (BN96-30068A vs BN96-30070A from samsung) . All other info(numbers) is the same on the tcon board. The former is suggested for 50“ models the latter for 65” .

I was told you have to use the correct one for your model and size

If it recomends a specific model it will only work on that one. If it’s recommended for various models then you ca alternate. Sizes of screen will defer on boards to be used.

Ours is a Sony Bravia that is now over 10 years old. Several months ago we started noticing lines, especially on the left (our left) side of the screen. They’d go away after the tv warmed up. Then we started noticing it was darker on that side of the screen, but again, after the tv warmed up the screen would be normal. Then about two months ago it started getting worse and didn’t ever get completely better, even after the tv warmed up. So I watched some youtube videos that all talked about the ribbon cables becoming loose over time and to apply pressure along the top and see if that made it better, and if so, it was a loose cable and if you put electrical tape or something that would help keep the pressure, it would fix the problem. Hubby pressed along the top and sure enough, when he pressed in one spot on the left side suddenly the picture cleared up. Stayed good for about a week, then problems again, pressed again, fixed again. A week or so later, same problem, but this time when he pressed on it nothing got better.

So I decided to take the cover off and look at it better. As I was pressing on the tops of the ribbon cables that run down from the top of the frame, for a minute it got better but then suddenly there was a wide white vertical line, with a thin green one down the center of it, running down the front of the screen, and it was perfectly aligned with one of the cables. So now I still have the dark side of the screen, and some ghosting, and some lines, but now this bright white streak/line right down the front. Another weird thing is that if the whole screen is bright (like watching a show set in a snowy place) then the darkness even on the left side is basically gone, but if the scene is dark at all, that side is almost black. I don’t know if it means that particular ribbon cable is bad, or if something is loose, if things need to be replaced or what. It’s very frustrating as it’s been a great tv. Hubby wants to just buy a new one, but even if he does I would still like to try and figure out this one as it could then go in another room.

%#*@, just this evening my LG LED TV turned black screen. The sound goes on but the screen is black. But in the dark of the room I see flashes of TV light go on and off at intervals.

I wonder if I have a tcon problem or the main board problem. Who has a lead? Thanks

check the smps and led driver voltages

さんによる

nope - its back lights thats bad, do the flashlight test to confirm . get room as dark as possible , with set on and audio press menu button and hold flashlighgt @ 4 to 6 inches away and amid where the menu normally appears. if you can read the words of menu , your problem is diffidently bad led(s) inside the screen . a lot of manufactures uses cheap cheap LEDS most failures happen @ year number 3 , I seen them fail within the first 6 months. One thing you can do to prolong your leds from failing is to lower BACK LIGHT setting , I usually go 40 to 50 % lower it reduces current to leds which will not stressed them as hard. Think of it as a dimmer control. notice price of TVs going down, but never ask why? Its bc they putting cheaper parts and finding cheaper labor > have you EVER head the word QUALITY in ANY commercial selling TVs? Some TVs are refer to POS because if you ever open one up to work on it, its a joke how it was made. TVs use to get past down to the next generation, instead to the landfill.

If there are 4 or more burnt out LED's then that could be the problem. I had the same issue with my LG so I asked one of the people on You Tube who post TV repairs and he said the same thing you did. I took my screen off, plugged the TV in and there where 2 burnt LED's. I replaced the LED's and it made no difference what-so-ever. I checked voltages on the main board and the power supply. The power supply checked out ok but the main board had a spot that should have been putting out 12 volts but it was only putting out 5 volts. I have had no luck at all on finding a main board for my TV ( it was only 2.5 years old at the time ). I did however come across a much older Sharp LCD TV that I picked up for 2 bucks. Fantastic picture... far better than my LG ever hoped to have.

Hi @boyershanna ,

Usually TCON problems show as vertical lines not horizontal lines.

Horizontal lines can be caused by faulty panel drivers on the side of the panel or maybe a mainboard but I'm thinking the panel

さんによる

Curious, so half of my vizio display has a strange issue of a bright image being on the display, the section where the image is actually ghosts down the panel a bit, not the image but the light/dark areas framed by the image. Hard to explain I guess but I believe this seems to match a TCON problem. it only happens on this one side of the display. I've taken it apart before and replaced the LED's already so I verified it has a separate strip for each side so I'm guessing TCON ?

It is not the panel, it's the 2 FPCs!

TLDR: Oxidized/bad contacts of the two flat flex cables from T-CON board to the LCD panel distribution board.

Block Image

I had the exact same issue and fixed it.

For me the issue started with static equally spaced horizontal lines every 6 pixels (this may not be the same for you). I didn't care much, because they were not noticable at normal distances. They were not completely black, but darker. So I lived with it.

Block Image

After 20 months, out of nothing suddenly also colored vertical lines appeared. Mostly red lines, but some few lines of other colors as well. The intensity varied depending on the displayed image, The lines were on both screen halves, left and right. After power on the lines faded in within 10 seconds. Powering off and on again gave the same observation. The lines, initially non-existent, were fading in slowly,

Block Image

Not knowing the cause I tried everything except replacing boards due to availability.

Things I've done without any effect:

  • Reseating and wiggling cables. I took out the 2 FPCs (which was the culprit not knowing at that time) multiple times and it did not change anything. So I searched on the T-CON board.
  • Heat gun on components
  • Freeze spray on components
  • Because of some 120Hz ripple on the 12V supply for the T-CON board I tried using an external power supply (it draws about 1.4A - 2A current)

Block Image

  • I reflow soldered the BGA components: 2x RAM chips, Sony and WISE-Processor, because I thought mechanical stress of the heatsinks could have broken some BGA contacts

Block Image

  • I even inspected the panel driver chips and panel substrate, despite it's obvious that it could not be the problem as the stripes were not limited to a specific section (column) of the screen.

3 days for nothing. I almost gave up.

I gave it a last try and when I tested the screen with only one of the FPCs seated, suddenly the lines were gone (the screen half of the connected FPC of course).

So I rubbed the FPC pads with antistatic clothing and isopropyl alcohol.

Block Image

(not the actual picture, because I forgot to take one)

Wipe these pads really good! 2 times is not enough! Do it for a minute or so and BAM:

No lines anymore!

I also cleaned the other one and this fixed the horizontal lines!

Block Image

Conclusion:

Check your FPCs first and clean them properly! Even if one is responsible for only one screen half it could influnce both halves!

Pressing the connector / cable, pushing, pulling, wiggling and reseating (multiple times) the cable did not make the slightest impression beeing the culprit.

I've also read that adding a stripe of scotch tape on the back of the cable (increases thickness) could improve the contact.

Also check the other end (panel distribution board). For that the screen must lay on it's back to prevent the display falling out.
