Is this a video card or what

This is going out to our resident pros. So @mayer and @danj I have a old iMac at the office. Here's its specs from everymac.

My problem is a white screen on startup. Nothing but white you can hear the chimes and I figured the video card or cable and was going to tear it down for a more careful examination.

What happened next kind of has me baffled. I know I've done this with tons of PCs but never with a Mac.

One of the guys in the office had seen me preform a static discharge on a PC and figured I can do that so he shut down the Mac unplugged it and and held down the power button for 30 sec or so then powered it on and this actually worked. However every time the mac is shut down or goes to sleep it comes back on with the white screen and requires the "Treatment".

What am I looking at here . Is there a short in the board thats causing this to happen and Ive never heard of this fix working on a mac before.

Can one of you to kindly direct me in the right direction to fix this issue. Would be ever so grateful for the help

Given the fact you need to reset the system to get it to boot up leads me to beleave your issue is a dead PRAM battery. Here is the IFIXIT Guide to get to it: iMac Intel 20" EMC 2133 and 2210 PRAM Battery Replacement

The static reset is what we call SMC reset on a Mac. Here's a good Apple T/N that explains it: Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac. Here's a good T/N on the PRAM: How to reset NVRAM on your Mac

To prove it make sure your system is not connected to the internet as you don't want it to access the Apple time server. Now set the data & time correctly manually. Safe the settings then create a file to make sure the date & time stamp are correct. Now shut down the system give it some time and restart when you get back to the desktop make a new file it's date & Time will be back to the default.

Here's a good write-up: Fix a Mac Showing the Wrong Time & Date

Hey @danj I was a little to quick to accept your answer, I guess i need more help . I replaced the PRAM battery and and all seemed well but its started the same deal over again . Tore it down again last night and found the battery has been totally drained . put the board under the scope and looked at the capacitors near the PRAM most tested ok but I noticed some trace were browned off . Is this an overload burning the trace and draining the battery and if so where is the surge coming from . Any Ideas ? If I just put jumpers in without finding the source of the initial burn it's probably going to happen again.

No problem, clearly there is a short somewhere. You'll need to get the schematics and boardview to trace back what in the circuit is bad. Otherwise it's a new logic board. Sorry :-{

@jimfixer unacceptable the answer until you have a resolution, otherwise no one else will look at this question. I only looked at it because I was upvoting answers.

What was the result of your date and time test with the internet hook up? Also is your printer dropping off line? I have yet to see one of these round PRAM batteries fail. The old 1/2 AA batteries died all the time.

@mayer - It worked! Then the battery died as there is a short.
