What would cause a short to completely drain a new battery installed?

I have installed a new battery in an iPhone 6s that was water damaged. A new battery and new screen seemed to fix it. I ran all my test and everything worked fine except the back camera (which is either the camera or a chip). After about 15 min the phone went dead and the new battery showed no volts. Did I happen to have a bad battery or is there something that would short it out to kill a new battery that quick?

With water damage, you have to decontaminate the logic board before doing anything else, otherwise there will be latent issues down the road (as you have already noticed).

Not every water-damaged phone is recoverable and depending on the kind of liquid (salty, dirty, filthy), sometimes the success rate is quite low. That said, IMHO, it's always worth a try otherwise we are just piling up the e-waste.

The water is inside the phone, on the logic board and under the shields, even under the IC's. The real issue is the mineral deposits that can cause short circuits or the corrosion that is taking place as the water evaporates. Powering on the device accelerates the process. The saltier or harder the water is, the more damage will occur. The water needs to be displaced, not evaporated.

I would do the following immediately:

  • Open your phone and remove the logic board (follow this guide)
  • Inspect the logic board, especially around the connectors and look for corrosion.
  • Inspect both sides of the board. Unfortunately, 80% of the board is covered in shields. That's usually where the damage is occurring.
  • Put your board in a container with >90% isopropyl alcohol and let it sit for a while.
  • Use a soft brush, like a toothbrush and lightly brush away any corrosion you see.
  • Rinse in alcohol and repeat.
  • Let it air dry for a day.
  • Re-assemble and hope for the best.

A professional repair shop that does water damage repair may be able to recover your phone or the data because they have access to pro-level ultrasonic baths and specialized cleaners as well as the skills to troubleshoot your board. Many shops have a no fix/no fee policy so you don't have to spend money to find out if the phone is fixable or not.

I am a repair shop. I have essentially done all the steps listed above. I do not have an ultrasonic cleaner, but I soaked the board in isopropyl 90+ and then brushed off all corrosion that I could see and let it dry. I replaced the screen and put a new battery in. everything seemed good. the phone booted ran correctly all test were good except the back camera was still not working. Then it died. Went totally dead and the new battery showed no volts and the phone would not receive a charge. My question is; is there something on the board that can short a new battery and ruin it or is it more likely the new battery I put in just was bad?

There was not much noticeable corrosion inside the phone. I do realize that under the shields can be different and I do not have the capability at this point to do micro soldering or take the shields off. I just try to do what I can. This is the first time I have had this happen though. Lol. I really appreciate the help.

Also, until I am able to set up my own micro soldering, I would be interested in an option for somewhere to send in my repairs that need micro or more in depth repair as my goal is to provide solutions to my customers.

Yeah, I noticed you were a shop after I posted but you also didn't say what you had done so I always assume the worst. You certainly have to remove the shields. On the 6S, there is only 1 soldered on shield, the two in the back are cloth. Even if you don't see anything, the fact that the phone died shortly after would indicate that there is still water somewhere (I would also use only >99% IPA too).

You could have a bad battery but I doubt it. At least as a shop you can isolate that pretty easily. There is still something shorting your board and at this point it requires a micro-soldering repair (unless the battery...). I offer mail-in services, as do several other frequent contributors here. You can check out my profile or search for someone more local.
