iPhone 5 battery won't charge after screen replacement

I have been successful in repairing many iphones over the past months. Screen and battery replacements, power and volume buttons, etc.

I did a routine screen replacement on my son's iphone 5 last night and reconnected everything. Worked beautifully. He plugged it in before going to sleep and woke up and it was dead. (Battery was replaced a few months ago.)

Now when you plug it in to charge it doesn't vibrate and just shows the red battery and cord images on screen...but never charges.

I've gone through and removed and reconnected the screen and the same with the battery with no changes. Also can't do a power button/home button hold with any reset results either.

I have looked at the logic board right near the battery connection and it all looks fine with no visible damage.

I would appreciate any help you all might be able to provide! Should i order a replacement battery and/or lightning charge port?

Thank you ALL! iFIXIT Rocks! - Dave

A usb ammeter is the tool you need here--inexpensive on eBay. Figure out whether the device pulls any charging current and then troubleshoot parts--dock and battery to determine if this is a board level issue or not.

Thank you Jessa. I was able to try another IPhone 5 battery in it (my sons twins sister also has an iPhone 5.) I took out hers and put it in his and the phone started right up and it charged right away when I plugged it in. I plugged and unplugged it over and over again and it started charged each time. So...I think the charging port is good and the battery needs to be replaced. I have ordered a new one and hope to get the current one that I replaced via iFixit in Dec16 replaced under warranty. Thank you for your reply!

Hello Jessabethany. Well, i wasn't so lucky. I got a new battery and installed it. Shows the charging lightning bolt, but started at 60% and isn't increasing after about an hour. I see that ifixit doesn't have any logic boards to buy right now. :-( Should i assume it's a board/IC charging chip at this point or do more trouble shooting as you suggest? I'm also considering a certified used iphone 5 from gazelle. Only $98 and a logic board is about $80. Thanks for any advice you can provide. Have a GREAT evening! - Dave

If this phone was able to charge a different battery a few days ago, and is only showing fake charging with this one, I'd definitely look hard to make sure that you haven't accidentally knocked off FL11--a tiny dude on the board next to the battery connector. If you've knocked it off, the phone may be charging (a usb ammeter will tell you) but doesn't "know" it's charging because gas gauge communication line is down.

thank you Jessabethany for your response. so...you think i may have knocked this "tiny dude" off the board (which i would assume can't be repaired and would require a new logic board.) When i put the phone all back together the phone said the newest battery was at 60%...i left it charging for a few hours and it didn't change...in fact the power seems to be falling off. Are you saying it might still be charging, but just isn't increasing the percentage number as it should...and the only way i can confirm this is with this USB ammeter? I found one on amazon...diymore Charger Doctor Ammeter with Red/Blue Display for about $8. Will this do what i need? Would you help me understand better how i need to test it to find out what is going on with this iphone and maybe how to save it? Sorry for all my novice questions. I will plug it in tonight and let it charge overnight just in case. Probably won't show anything in the morning, but maybe it will get something. Thanks for your help Jessabethany! Talk to you soon!

Just one more comment Jessabethany...any chance you can show me where that FL11 (tiny dude) is on the board and what it should look like so i could compare? Thank you! PS...i'm sorry i didn't click on your profile before! I have 4 kids too...so 5 iphones, 2 ipads, and a macpro to watch over. ;-) Thanks again for your support...i would really like to fix this phone...although my son is hoping to have to get a newer one.

Did you confirm the phone would charge while it is on?

Sounds like charging IC chip at fault if you already checked charging port and that it shows no signs of damage on the 8 charging pins or clogged up with gunk / dust or lint inside.

If it is the Charging IC it can only be replaced by someone that does micro soldering as it's soldered to the logic board.

Thank you Ben for your Answer to my question. Please see my response to Jessa as I did a battery swap and it seemed to do the trick and charged when I plugged it in. Would you agree? Let me know if you don't agree. Thanks again!!
