How to be sure I need new backlights

Block Image

Vizio E60C3

Have several dark bands on the screen. I see that the backlights for this tv come in 12 strips. My question is can I have half of one of the strip out when the other half is light?

All of the lower right half of the screen and a band adout 3" wide in the center of the left half are dark. Very noticeable on white screen. I still have a picture just very dark. The dark areas extend exactly halfway across the screen as if the backlight strips are half lite.

Update (07/29/2017)

Excuse my question but if the power supply were to fail wouldn't I loose all the lights?

Thanks

@alvan thanks for the image. Odd looking but I would go with failed backlight as well. Now you have to check if it is the lights or the power to the lights.....

@alvan could be that your LED strips have failed but it could also be that the power board is not supplying power to the strips. You'll have to unplug your set and remove the back. then check the power board. Look for any obvious damage like leaking, domed or burned caps. Post some images of what your boards look like

as well as what your screen displays, with your question. That way we can see what you see. Use this guide iFixitでの質問に画像を追加する方法 for that

My E60 Vizio was doing the same thing, eventually my TV went black. I ordered the backlight strip set from ShopJimmy followed the instructions on the video and fixed my TV. Check out the video on YouTube. Good luck be patient and take your time.

My TV looks like the one above, it is Vizio E70-E3. The 12 LED backlight strips appear to be controlled in sections of three Strips (each strip is 10 LEDs of 3V DC apiece). The pic above shows the lower right quadrant failing (one section of three strips). On my TV it was lower right and then a month later the top right also went dim.

Important - the dimmer strips appear to be working still, but they are just dimmer. If I use the "backlight" adjustment I can see them working but they remain about 50% DIMMER than the rest of the TV.

When I look at the main power board I see there are 4 LED voltage control outputs (indicating four sections as I said).

But what I can't determine is whether it is the LED strips or the power board which is bad, or maybe even the T-Com board. It has been really hard to find information ion this specific problem online.

Please feel free to email me at motterpaul "at" gmail dotcom if you have any ideas about this.

Paul Motter very unlikely to be a T-con board error. You need to measure the individual LED outputs on your power board to see if they are essentially all showing the same values. Let us know what you find out.
