Can I install a Mid 2012 MBA trackpad on the Late 2010 model?

I have a macbook air mid-2012 that has a failed logic board, and replacing it is probably more expensive than buying a used working mid2012 mba. Hence, I will not be fixing this one.

My mother has a late 2010 Macbook air, but her trackpad doesn't work properly (tracks movements, but cant click).

Hence, I would like to take the trackpad from the mid-2012 MBA and put it into my mothers late 2010 MBA. Visually, they seem the same. These two are separate parts

according to ifixit (MacBook Air 11" (Mid 2011-Mid 2012) Trackpad and MacBook Air 11" (Late 2010) Trackpad)

Would the mid-2012 trackpad work on the late 2010 MBA?

Before you go on replacing the trackpad, I would check the battery first. If the trackpad tracks movement but can't click, it could be that the battery is swelling and pushing the trackpad up a little bit. That is a common problem in MacBooks, and seems more likely.

Hi, thanks for this remark. Is there a way to find out if the battery is swollen or the trackpad needs replacing? The main issue is that as my family lives far away (3000 miles away), I would have to prepare myself with everything I need for when I go over and fix them. Is there a way to determine if this is due to the battery?

@phlouzo If the trackpad seems to be pushing up in some spots, it's hard to click, or doesn't register clicks all the time, it's probably the battery. Have the relative check how many cycles the battery has. If it is close to 500 or above, that increases the chance of it being the battery. Also check if the battery condition is service battery or check battery.
