When I use my new phone for calls, it always turns on and starts doing random things during the call. Have tried to adjust all kinds of sensitivity settings. Have only a slim case on it...no screen protector yet. Very frustrated. Thanks!!

This is a problem with the proximity sensor not recognizing your face being near it.
Do me a favor, and type *#0*# into the dial pad, and select Sensor
Run your hand across the top of the screen, and if the device turns green, and begins to vibrate, then your sensor is working fine, and there is a setting somewhere that is being missed.
if it does not, you have a failing sensor, and you need to repair it.

Better so take it back to Samsung for warranty.
this is true, but this is also a repair forum. so i assumed they wanted a diagnosis. the least helpful answers ive ever found on a forum is "take it somewhere," so i dont give that as an answer.
though i agree they should take it in for warranty, should there not be any signs of abuse to the device, and samsung will not honor the warrante if there is even a scratch on the display.
I have Android 8.0 and tried the diagnostic. No fault found with the proximity sensor. Putting my thumb over the sensor and the numbers change and the screen dims and when I remove it the numbers change again and the screen gets brighter. Yet when I make a call my screen is always on also and stopped switching off. Ive even cleared my devlik cache and rebooted with no luck

I was having the same problem. My son and I got S8 phones at the same time, his worked mine didn't. I tested the sensor on my phone and it worked great. After reading more, I realized it might be my new phone case so I took it off. Guess what, phone works without the case. So, what's the problem, I was using a magnetic wallet case. The magnet was interfering with proper functioning. I'm bummed too because I really like this case.

This is exactly my problem. I like my case, but the magnet seems to be the issue. :(
Turning on Smary Stay doesn't make it any better
The case must be covering the proximity sensors on the top notch I dont think it is the magnets

found the issue and the solurikn guys!!!!
youll have to trun off the smart stay feature to stop this problem.....

Mine is off yet the phone screen still will not go black when I make calls. Even doing the diagnostic test for the proximity sensor its fine when I put my thumb over it and the light dims. Just only on calls it does not switch off

Mine does not have a case only a scratch guard still it doesnt work need help

Remove the screen protector. Its covering the 2 sensor circles near the camera and speaker on the top notch

Most likely the case. Take it out of the case and try it . If it works then it's your case. IF not take it back under 1 year manufactures warranty and let the company know it hasn't worked. They should replaced the phone.

I have the same issue with my note 8. Theres no screen protection and none of these options noted worked. My husbands screen goes black when hes on a call but nothings worked for mine and im tired of hanging up on people and changing random settings/opening apps while on the phone!

Hi I own the Samsung Galaxy 8. When I went through my phones settings their was a pla c.f. where u can shut down the full screen during a call and just make it look like a small bubble. I hope that works.

Cant find smart stay. Using samsung galaxy M31
I noticed this issue on my Note 8 after I installed Sync.me. I disabled the CallerID feature (thinking maybe that’s preventing the screen from turning off during the call) and restarted my phone. The proximity sensor started working during phone calls, again. Then I reactivated the CallerID feature in the Sync.me app out of curiosity and tried another phone call and it still works. Not sure what the problem was, but maybe turning off the CallerID feature in a 3rd party app that you may have installed may do the trick (because it pops up during the call).

I have the same issue. S7 edge Android 8.0. Was working fine until a month ago. Cant tell if its the samsung patch update or not. I have no screen protector, no case. Dialled that number for the diagnostic tool ran the sensor test. No issue with proximity sensor reported. I have cleared my devlik cache, rebooted, enabled and disabled smart stay and it has not fixed anything for me. Would like some help if any

The solution was somewhat easy for me but was hard to find…
Go to Settings>Advance Features>Motions and gestures then <TURN OFF> DIRECT CALL (make a call by bringing your phone close to your ear). Makes sense eh? You could leave SMART STAY on…
That’s it. Works like a charm…

If using phone (speaker) or voicemail, screen goes black & only wakes up w/ power button

IMO if xposed 2 light, it thinks it's not being used.

Checked my sensor per someone's suggestion and it's working fine... but cannot find a place to turn off the screen during a call... you would think that if's it's black... no apps would open or whatever random issues develop

My phone changes screens while I’m on a call and I guess it’s my ear or cheek that continually presses numbers in my and the other person’s ear! Sometimes it’ll even open up FB, YouTube, messenger etc., and start playing whatever video it pops up or authorizes Siri to vocalize whatever text it then shows on the screen. So frustrating!!
