Largest SSD Option in Mac Mini (Mid 2011)

Mac mini (Mid 2011)

I installed a 240 GB SSD as my boot drive and a 750 GB platter drive in the second bay a few years ago. Has been running flawlessly. I was thinking of bumping up the SSD to more like a 500 GB or larger but when I initially installed this current config I did so because it was apparently "all this machine could handle." I didn't know if that was a power draw thing or what, but maybe current gen SSDs are more power conservative so actual size isn't an issue? Can anyone confirm or deny, can I use bigger SSDs? Can I use bigger platter drives too? Is a 1 TB SSD and a 1TB platter reasonable expectation or is this not possible? Thanks

I have a Mac Mini 2011 with:

Main bay: Samsung SSD 850 EVO 1TB

Second bay: HGST HTS721010A9E630 (1TB 7200RPM steam powered disk)

It works just fine ... I have a few symlinks that point over to the second disk, which I call 'Media Disk' ... in particular I symlink '~/Music/iTunes/iTunes\ Music', '~/Music/iTunes/Mobile\ Applications' and '~Library/Application\ Support/MobileSync' over to the Media Disk as those are mostly large and not often changing files. Using the symlinks that far down keeps the media directory files on the SSD for quick access.

I've been running like this for more than a year (and for over a year with a 512GB SSD before that). The machine is running 24x7.

Actually the Media disk is starting to fill up and I'm wondering whether to change it for a FireCuda 2TB, which seems to be quite a low power device as well ... probably lower than the HGST 7200! It's a shame HGST isn't making larger 7200RPM drives but so it goes.

You can probably set this up as a fusion drive. With that in mind, the 240GB SSD is fine. I would just upgrade the secondary storage drive.

Thanks. I don't want a fusion drive and I know the 240 works as I've been doing that for two plus years. Wondering if anyone has any experience with larger capacity SSDs (500 gb or higher) and platter drives larger than (750GB) together?

Well, I do. I started with a 256GB in my 2009 MacPro and then went to a 500GB. Outside of a higher cost, I experienced no issues.

I think a Mac Pro has significant more power to play with than a MacMini, that's why I was wondering if anyone has actually done it on a Mini as a few years ago I read that the configuration I have done was all that was possible. But didn't know if that was A. a power capacity thing, B. physical drives sizes at the time, or what. I figured if either was the issue then both those drive types could be smaller and more power efficient by now. So sounds like I'll just have to try it.

It probably had to do with the SSD drives. We has seen dramatic lowering of costs on these and thus many more people using them. As to addition power requirements on larger SSD drives I've heard nothing on that. You're not trying to drive platters here. I anticipate no issues even going to a 1TB SSD.
