hi, i have an asrock z77 extreme4 motherboard but has a broken capacitor near the VRM modules.

is it safe/recommended to replace this with a higher capacitance capacitor.

i have attached pictures below.

No. A High Capacitance Capacitor will not work. And you said resistor which will DEFINETLY not work.

With Capacitors, you can normally go with a high voltage, although it might be larger, but not a higher capacitance.

Since that is a part you can really only purchase online, you should be able to find the right values no problems.

You can get them on eBay but I would suggest http://www.mouser.com/ as they have a HUGE selection of electronic parts for cheap and are trustworthy, reliable and fast to ship (depending on where you live) Vs eBay which will probably come from China which can take weeks or months to get to you.

And I'm assuming you know how to solder and desolder (but if you don't, let me know and I will find you a great tourtial on how to do it), but be careful, if this capacitor says somewhere that it is polarized (which I would check before attempting to solder or desolder anything). If you put it in wrong, you could damage your board.

I would also suggest getting 2 or 3 caps in case you mess one of them up.

Also, I would suggest some solder wick or a solder sucker to make your life easier. If you don't have these or don't want to purchase them, you should be able to get it out by just heating up both pins and pulling from the other side.

If you have any questions, please ask below. I should be able to answer any question you have as this is my field of expertise

I had meant to say capacitor not resistor, oops, guess I'll edit, would it be recommended to buy them new or is it fine to desoldier them from say a graphics card if it has the same capacitance+voltage?

Thanks again

You could. But I would really suggest getting them new as desoldering and resoldering can have come consequences. I have done it before, but there could be issues in the future. And sometimes desoldering caps off gpu's can be almost impossible. Ive seen cases where someone just soldered the new cap on the back because they couldnt remove them. Since this is a nicer board, I would suggest just to get a new one.

Fair point, would it be best to try and match brand/looks or it doesn't really matter?

Brand really doesn't matter. You should try because it makes it look better and more uniform, if you can't just get whatever has the same exact specs
