The laptop crashes almost each time I open the lid to wake it up

As mentioned, almost each time I wake up my laptop by opening the lid, it crashes.

Sometimes short after, sometimes after a good 20 minutes.

Also, after closing the lid (so that my laptop can sleep), the sleep indicator light goes off completely after pulsating only for a short while, unlike before when it glowed continuously until I opened the lid again.

(This happens with and without AC adapter connected).

What I tried:

-reset SMC and NVRAM

-ran AHT twice and another third party tester

-reinstalled clean El Capitan and Sierra 3 or 4 times

-opened enclosure and checked if cables were properly connected

any ideas?

I'm currently running El Capitan 10.11.6 (15G1510) with everything up to date.

I am assuming that when the laptop is off and the lid is open, you can turn it on and it will boot and operate normally and not shut off on its own?

I would say check the "LID" lines, using of course a multimeter. Not sure what this model uses for hall-effect / lid detection, but a simple "lid" search using the schematics should point you to the right component.

If you can find the board number (820-xxxx), the schematics and board view, we can help with this.

I can boot normally without issues.

To be honest I don't understand what you're asking me to do.

If you find the number of the mother board in your computer, you can then look for the "schematics" which is the "drawing" of how all the small components on your mother boards are related to each other. This is usually a searchable PDF document. Once you search for the word "lid" it will show you how one single component detects that the lid of the computer is closed or opened; and the schematics also show how this information travels to the rest of the components that need to know the lid is closed or open (such as the screen, in order to light on or turn off). It could be that the component detecting the lid closure is faulty, or something else gone wrong on the "road" travelled by the information from the lid detector to the rest of the components. To trouble shoot the issue, you need to use a digital multimeter to measure voltages and resistances which are the vital signs of the mother boards and the components mounted on it.

Obviously, this is all very new to you, so in other words: your mother boards seem faulty. It must be diagnosed by someone with specific experience in board level diagnostic and repair. Or just turn the computer off every time you need to close the lid.

If you still want to repair it, tell me where you are, may be we can recommend someone. Or look up my profile here on iFixit. There is a link for a website with addresses of techs who do these kinds of repairs. Most of them accept mail-in repairs.
