LVDS cable replacement on aluminium bezel matte display

Hi,

I have a piece of history... A1297 17inch mid 2010 first gen i7

It has the aluminium bezel... just coming from mobo repair as the gone bad LVDS cable caused a bit of havoc around the connector.

My question: the aluminium bezel on top of actual LCD panel - is that glued or clipped in?

Can't seem to find much...they are rare compared to usual glass covered panels.

Any best practice advice as I need to remove the frame to get to the lcd end of the lvds.

First here is the IFIXIT guide for the job: MacBook Pro 17" Unibody LCD Replacement. While the guide goes deeper into replacing the screen you can follow it to the point you'll need to get to replace the cable (Step33).

While some people prefer to take the lid fully apart. I find I can sneak the cable though at the point the clutch cover is removed (go though Step26, then jump down to Step28 & Step29, then jump to Step33). Going this way I don't deal with the cover glass at all.

well that's the whole question, as I don't have any cover glass just aluminium bezel - there was an option back in those days for matte lcd and that came without glass, rather an aluminium bezel.. I'll post some photos tomorrow.

Once I get the %#*@ screws out from hinge, one of them managed to bend my T6 screwdriver completely on its axis, all the 5 points are circled around.

I may have to drill out - T6 bolts on 2010 A1297, I guess they learned their lesson as 2011/2012 have T7 bolts on hinge. I'll replace them with T7 A1286 bolts! ffs

The bezel is glued onto the glass on the Hi-res display ;-}

just as I expected, glue is cheaper then bolts and every penny counts!

ordered the lvds cable.

I'll have to do the slide under method, to avoid that pristine aluminium bezel to be damaged. If not possible, will heat up the edges and take my time to gently remove it, plastic playing cards are the best!

the screen is 1920x1200.

Seen alu bezel on ebay at $80/£80 lol! bargain!

I had to drill out 3 of 6 bolts last night... as they were T6 - either ate the bolt head or broke my screwdriver...

The good screwdrivers ate the bolts, the bad screwdrivers snapped.

I suspect they realised soon after adding glue on a T6 bolt, which is under a lot of stress with 17 inch panel weight, will not be helpful if they (Apple) have to do a warranty repair in their shop... hence 2011 onwards have T7 hinge screws..

The hinge bolts will receive an upgrade to T7 screws!

it is all in bits, waiting for the postman with the LVDS cable.. :)

the alu frame seems to be pretty straight, no way to not bend it slightly.

Use a painting knife to heat and slide under the bezel, you will not bend it at all this way.

The hinge T6 screws in the older 17" models are very difficult to remove without stripping as you have found, it is not just yourself. In this model in particular, they are far more difficult to remove, since they are tightened a lot more than the 13/15 models. Newer models with T8 screws are much better :)
