Hard drive making a clicking noise

My hard drive was hooked up to my computer when it accidently fell. Now when i plug it back in, it powers up (the blue light comes on) but it makes a clicking noise and doesnt show up on my computer. Please tell me my data isnt lost. I have thousands of photos on this hard drive. I need a way to get them off.

what kind of computer do you have? If it's clicking like that, generally that does indicate a busted drive, but maybe it's just the USB interface that failed in the fall. If you have a Mac, you can go to the Apple Menu in the top left corner, hold down option on your keyboard and open System Information.

If you look at the tree on the left of the window, you'll see USB at the bottom of the list. Check and see if your hard drive is showing up there at all under that section- it would probably read TOSHIBA or something like that.

On a hard disk drive, the click of death refers to a similar phenomenon; the head actuator may click or knock as the drive repetitively tries to recover from one or more errors. These sounds can be heard as the heads load or unload, or they can be the sounds of the actuator striking a stop, or both.
