Why won't my speaker work after digitizer replacement?

Hello,

I have a problem with my IPad.

After replacing the digitizer (with IFixIt parts, dissasembled and assembled with IFixIt tools, and using the IFixIt guide) I found out that the only thing that does not work is my lower speakers. I don't know if it has anything to do with the screen replacement, it might just be a coincidence, but is there anything I can try?

Thanks,

Mitch

Generally speaking, there is no reason to touch/work on the speakers while changing the digitizer. Do you know for certain if the speakers worked before the repair?

The speaker connections go through the charge port flex, which is soldered onto the logic board. I would visually inspect the flex (without removing it). Take a look at this picture. If you see any damage to the flex, get a good picture and post it here so I can take a look.

The flex cable is intact. The lightning connection still works. I'm pretty sure that the speaker worked before I replaced it, although it did sit broken for a couple months before I changed the digitizer. I just tried unscrewing and rescrewing the screws holding in the speaker as suggested on another thread, and that did not work. Any suggestions?

Did you touch those screws before? They have to be re-assembled exactly like in the guide.

As far as a speaker problem, it could be the speakers, the driver IC's or the surrounding passive components. I find it odd that both don't work as they have independent circuitry.

Dumb question...but are you sure the volume is turned up and that you are not on "silence/mute" mode?

Yes, the volume is all the way up and mute is not on :)

I had just touched those screws, took them out along with the washers and put them back in to see if that did anything, it didn't. How am I supposed to put them back in exactly? The guide didn't really say.

I could just order another speaker but I really don't want to order anything else for this ipad, I already had to RMA the digitizer to IFixit because it was defective. The new one works though.

I dont know what you mean about the speakers having seperarate circuitry, but alright.

If you have any other information, then I would love to know it. If not, I guess ill just have an IPad with broken speakers. The headphone jack still works so it wouldnt be a huge deal.

What does the inside of the headphone port look like? Is it old and worn. One possibility is that the pins inside are always "depressed" (as if the headphone was plugged in). That would tell the logic board that it should not play sound out of the speaker. That may explain why both speakers do not work. Blow it out, clean it with IPA and use a toothpick to see if the internal contacts move in and out normally. Otherwise, you could try to replace the headphone port.
