My MacBook will turn on, but nothing shows on screen

My MacBook will charge, and turn on no problem.

I was checking my email, and the screen just went black and hasn't come back on.

Can you tell us the exact model here. If you can read the S/N on the bottom cover plug it into here: EveryMac - Lookup Then paste your systems URL here so we can see what you have.

The answer providers here, so far, are peeing into the wind without knowledge of the exact machine they are talking about. I am down voting both.

Boys, - GET THE FACTS FIRST!

Try "peeing" in the wind somewhere else old timer. I'm trying to figure out how to fix my MacBook. Don't respond if you don't want to help.

First, remove and check the logic board for liquid damage. If this has suddenly lost image as you describe, it is likely liquid is the cause. You can clean any blue/green corrosion using a brush and 95%+ isopropyl, or an ultrasonic cleaner if you have one available.

Beyond this, it will either need soldered components replaced or the LCD cable replaced (need to remove the glass to do this, which is difficult for a first timer), so send it somewhere if you have no tools or experience microsoldering. There is no point self diagnosing from here on, if you cannot resolve the issue yourself, it's just a waste of time :)

Check the LCD connector for burnt pins, and the LCD cable for missing plastic/pins or burn marks. Shine a light inside the LCD connector and have a look to see if anything looks off compared to the rest of the connector. If anything looks dodgy in here, the connector is likely not recognising a plugged in screen, which will obviously result in no picture.

Grab a schematic and board view for your model (820-2936, Google it to find files), and search in the board view program for "LCD_IG_PWR_EN", this will tell you where to measure this signal on the board. If this is not present, the MacBook is not recognise the new screen, and this is usually caused by a bad LCD connector or cable.

This is the first thing you need to check for no picture issues, let me know how it goes if you decide to try this.

@b11g - The battery checker green LED's are telling you the battery is charged which is a good thing here. The MagSafe LED should likewise be green at this point. The Caps Lock key green LED should light when you engage caps lock. The White Sleep LED on the front when the lid is closed after awhile will tell you if the system is working (fading from on and off and back) then that would aim me to the built-in display is having problems. The best test now is connecting to an external monitor to see whats happening.

Did you bang your system or get it wet at some point? Spill something into the keyboard or track pad, or sit the system down on a wet surface.

I never got the system wet or even damp, it just sits on my desk at work to check emails throughout the day while I use my work desktop computer.. The MagSafe LED is green because its fully charged, but when it was charging it was orange like its suppose to be. The Sleep LED is lit, but remains lit doesn't fade in and out when lid is closed... Caps lock does not turn green when engaged though.

Do you have the needed tools to pop the bottom cover off? What we need to do here is see if any chips are burnt. As the keycap LED is not coming on this is starting to imply the PCH is having problems.

We really need to know which model you have to guide you.

MacBook Pro A1278 I haven't tried the external screen yet.

さんによる

Which one? there are over 15 with this model ID

さんによる

@danj You're exaggerating, there are only twelve A1278 machines. And Bren is going to make you guess which one it is. He also has earned my down vote for being an obtuse PITA.

Shine a flashlight into the screen from the back through the plastic apple logo - if you can see a faint image on the screen, then there is an issue with the LED backlight, which is usually a fault with the motherboard circuitry, and the LP8550 BGA chip which boosts the voltage is usually at fault.

Would that require a new logic board or a new display?

さんによる

I don't see any image at all, just the light from the flashlight.

さんによる

Okay, it doesn't seem to be an issue related to the backlight. If you haven't already, try resetting the PRAM and SMC.

さんによる

If you connect the laptop to an external display, does anything show?

さんによる

I have tried resetting both, but the screen is still black. I haven't tried the external display yet because I don't have the correct cords currently to do that.
