I have an Absolute V8, with the same problem!!

I still can’t do it. Do I need to find a bodybuilder?

I have the 7 animal & cant get it back on

I have a v7 animal and can’t get it back on.

さんによる

This is not as hard as everyone, including me, thought. After reading the existing answers and not really finding an answer (including the posted videos), I thought I would try one more thing before just buying a new bin. I fixed it it with little effort after figuring out the right approach. There is enough give in the two little prongs to slip the lid back in place if you insert one side, line up the other, and then use a flat head screwdriver to push sideways against the prong ont yet in place while exerting light pressure in the right direction. It sounds a bit harder than it actually was.

You really helped me, friend! Great post. Thanks.

Dyson could make reattaching the bin lid much easier, given how often the lid falls off. But this time, with L Pfaff's help, reattaching was pretty easy. Thanks, L.

Put one of the sides in place in the canister then with your thumb use a bit of force to push the other end into it's slot, I have just done mine and was also aware that it may break but you only need a little force and it won't break. Anyway back to the cleaning, hope this solves your problem

thank you so much, I have tried in vain to replace the flap and now I have finally been able to do it,

さんによる

perfect - was very after reading a little force

さんによる

Super It worked .Thanks a lot. Three critical things 1.Put in the longer hinge first 2.Keep the lid completely open 3 Apply slight pressure with your thumb . It snaps in. If you are applying too much pressure and it still doesn't snap on you may have probably the angle wrong . Go back to step one and two

さんによる

Oh my gosh... I did it! After 3 aggravating days. The key is to put the longer hinge in first. Thank you David and Hari... just saved me from buying a new vacuum!❤️

さんによる

I have a Dyson V7 and the hinges on the lid look to be the same length, but I did have the angle wrong at first - so thank you to hariharan krishnamurthi for tip #2! It made it super easy - I barely used any force at all to snap in the second hinge.

The 2 small lugs have to click back into place and this is extremely difficult. One lug is longer than the other so insert this one into its socket. Then, with the lid in the fully open position force the smaller lug into its socket.  It does require considerable force and I was worried about breaking it but there is some flexibility in the plastic so it didn’t snap off.

Thank you so much for mentioning the lug sizes and also pushing the lid in it’s fully open position! I’ve been trying to get the lid back on for ages and after reading your comments attached it within seconds.

さんによる

Thanks, the bit about the lugs was exactly what I needed to. The videos listed in another post were not helpful.

さんによる

Yes, thank you. The lug size difference on V8 is so slight, it was not obvious to me. After I read this, I went back and looked really carefully. Once slightly longer side was in first, the other popped back in place pretty easily.

さんによる

Thank you so much after bit of force with my thumb it clicked into place!

This vacuum is absolutey a piece of crap! Constantly need to clean and parts are hard to put together; hate it and wish I never purchased!

No way I could get this back on. About to bring it to Dyson Service Center. Tried one last time. GOT IT!! Trick is to make sure cover is COMPLETELY open.

I had the same problem and solved it using a small flat-bladed (electrical) screwdriver. Found the trick was to apply the tip of the blade, rather than the edge, to the plastic lug. Doing that means you only need a little pressure.

But please - if this happens to you, report the thing to Dyson even if you fix it. This will weaken the plastic lugs and having a thousand dollar (NZ) machine dependent on these little bits of plastic, even if Dyson replace willingly, is simply not acceptable. Great engineering on the motor is no good if there is rubbish engineering on the rest of the thing. If enough report, they will have to acknowledge this as a fault and change the bin design.

Well said, MikeJDiggins!! I've only looked into this subject after my poor wife forget that she'd tucked the thing out of immediate sight, came rapidly round a corner and totally crunched the thing! Flap came off in the scuffle and there we were, trying to get the offending flap back in. Admittedly, it looks impossible but reading these posts have eased my pain! However, I think I'll leave it for a fresh day..... Thanks again for the posts!

さんによる

Nice! That did the trick

さんによる

Make sure the blade is very thin, but not thin enough to bend. I found using a butter knife between the lug on the lid and the vacuum housing worked. Start pressing on the lid. Once you see the lug is part way in, slide the knife out and snap the lug in place. Don't hurt yourself.

It’s easy. Just squeeze the bin itself across the top diameter and you will notice that the pin lugs in the bin flex out a bit. Slot one pin off the lid into one side lug and then push the other in while squeezing the bin itself. Really easy. No brute force required

Excellent advice, worked a treat, no need to use screwdriver

さんによる

Use two people for sure and insert the longer tab first.

さんによる

RobertGuyPowell’s solution is exactly correct and worked but I will explain a little further. First the two pins are clear plastic and go into the side with the clear sockets, not the side with the red moving parts. If you look closely at the pins on the lid they are chamfered in one direction and that’s the direction you want to be pushing them to get them seated back in the hinge sockets. Now Robert says squeeze along the top diameter. This is the diameter 90 degrees to the axis between the hinge and the latch. On one side that is also where the word MAX is written - squeeze the canister between the MAX side and the other side. Get one of the pins in (mine seem to be the same length) and oriented so the chamfer (sloped) side of the other pin will be going straight in to the other socket as you squeeze the canister to open up that hinge area just a skootch. Really, it hardly moves but it’s enough. Stay with it, you can do it! Nice work Robert zeroing in on this fix.

さんによる

Thank you so much...I had tried everything. Squeezing the bin was the trick!!

Very helpful, especially your comment about the different sizes. I found I had to use a small flat headed screw driver to ease the ‘hinge’ back. It didn’t snap!

There is a whole batch of comments on this, there is a plastic hinge hidden inside apparently that customers don’t realise it has to attach itself to the dust bin to keep it secure- just google it- good luck.

I tried for days. I can’t do it. I don’t understand why it doesn’t just snap in…why did they make it this way????

I have to hold the lid shut when I vacuum. I hate it.

Judie,

Read the post by RobertGuyPowell above and ALL the comments (especially mine!). I agree that this is a giant pain and the lid never have should fallen off. Like you I must have banged it slightly before it was fully closed. I did it putting it back on the charger…am a lot more careful now. The good news is that it’s not broken and you don’t have to pay for an expensive repair. Have patience, maybe get a friend to help but follow Robert’s directions. It’s a tight fit and will not go back without muscling it ….a little bit. Stay with it, you can do it!

Yes. Leave the top of canister fully open. Place one hinge into slot and with a screwdriver gently manoeuvre the other hinge into the other slot. Don’t use too much force. Be calm and the task will be successful.

さんによる

What do you mean “leave completely open” and several people refer to the wrong angle. What is correct angle?

Just popped little door back on our rechargeable Dyson, found combination of squeezing the canister and a little force (not brute) did trick for me, along with a bit of heat from a hairdryer and liquid soap to lubricate, my steps/experience below.

Initially door was hanging on by the wrong side (the side with the red catches), once I realised that the usual steps to open the canister up made the door drop off as nothing holding it on any longer.

Make sure you familiarise yourself with the orientation of the door, make sure you don't overlook having it the right way up, seal needs to be facing to inside of canister. Not sure if it's possible to fit upside down, you don't want to be the one to find out though.

Get familiar with the little lugs on the door, as noted above mine were chamfered which must be an assembly aid, also appeared to be same length, if one is longer that's one to locate first.

I warmed up the lugs with a hairdryer, no need to go mad of have hairdryer on hottest setting, just get some warmth into the plastic, I usually do this if I can when snapping plastic hinges etc back together as the heat will give you a fraction more flex.

I also put a drop of liquid soap on the lugs and the part they snap in to on the canister just to help lube it up.

As noted above the chamfer is what you want to be using to assist in getting lugs in, I found that when door was at 90 degree open position (right angle to canister) that was where I needed to be.

Locate one lug (or longer one if different lengths) in the canister, and then I found a combination of squeezing the canister and pushing the other lug using chamfer worked for me, make sure you don't forget to keep door at right angles. I did have to put a little force into the push, the squeezing didn't work just on its own, certainly helped significantly though.

As with lots of these things do your research, study the part, ask yourself questions about why something looks like it does, it's usually for a reason, e,g. the chamfers on the lugs on the Dyson door are to aid assembly.

Slight variation on this question — my Dyson v11 fell and the lid popped off and I also found a small gray plastic piece with a spring in it on the floor. I thought this sat in the plastic hinge area, but it was impossible to replace the lid with this gray plastic piece that contains a spring in it. I’m hoping that the gray piece is optional and not required to open and close the lid, or comes from another part of the bin?
