Loud fan after upgrading from 500GB HD to 2TB HD

Me again! lol I upgraded from a 500GB seagate HD to a 2TB seagate HD and now I'm getting a loud fan. I know this has been an issue brought up in the past but I read through the past posts and none of the ideas fixed my issue. I re-checked the thermal sensor cable that I plugged into the HD because I read that some people had it plugged in upside down before. It only fits in one way so that's ruled out. In the tutorial for replacing the HD it says "During reassembly, be sure that the thermal sensor connector is connected to set of pins closest to the SATA connectors." The thermal sensor was a 4 pin connector and there are only 4 pins. So am I right in assuming that I have it corrct and that it may just have 2 pins or something in other brand HDs? Also, is it possible the LCD thermal cable is in upside down and that's causing the fan to go all out? I currently have windows 7 installed (alone without bootcamp) on my iMac so I don't have access to any of the mac utilities for checking fan speeds and such. Would I be able to download a windows base program for adjusting the fan and if so, would this be a poor idea? The fan is all out and it's doing it's job well as the computer is cool as ice so I'm thinking that taking it down a notch won't be an issue. Please educate moi!

Hello guys, I think I solved the problem of fan noise after replacing the original 500 gb hd with a 2TB in my case a model WD wd20ears.

The problem we found is that everyone immediately after replacing the disk after 10 minutes of hd the fan is not feeling up to the presence of the temperature sensor.

To make the measurements on the temperature and fan speed hd I use istat menus 3.

As you can see without connecting the temperature sensor istat menu is able to measure the temperature of the disk via the SATA interface, but the operating system can not measure the temperature of the HD, then go up to the fans after 10 minutes , making it almost unusable on your Mac.

Follow these steps:

1) install the new hd with the circuits up.

2) Connect the wires from the temperature sensor to the jumper as I will describe below! (Those who normally use to set master or slave disk)

the wires are connected where there are zeros, where there are x jumpers are free.

The black wire of the sensor goes to zero than the gray one less zero.

If it does not reverse the polarity, nothing happens will not burn out the device, the important and you do not use other jumpers do not know what could happen.

3) if you have properly connected the wires to the jumpers when you restart your imac istat menu to see inside the sensor 's hd does not measure the correct temperature, but the fan speed after 10 minutes but is still not crazy as internal manual to 1100 rpm.

4) you will see that as before there will be a subheading in istat your hd with the correct temperature.

Finally,

this means that the jumpers are used as a switch to alarm the motherboard in case of exceeding critical temperature and starts the fan until the contact opens again down in temperature.

Now you can use your iMac with a nice hd 2TB without becoming deaf.

Sorry for the translation

Stefano

the pins are different on a seagate, there are just 4 pins in a row, not 8 in 2 sets of 4. the connector only fits on in one way. and I'm using Windows 7, will istat work in windows?

Check iStat Pro to see what the computer thinks the temperature is for the HDD. Some HDDs are incompatible with those jumper pins that apple uses so you can either short them, live with it or swap it out with an actual thermal sensor (like the ones on the ODD)

Will iStat Pro work with Windows 7? cause as I said I only have Windows on the iMac now.

Err.. Speedfan for Windows

Plus up until recently I noticed that Boot Camp wouldn't work correctly with the SMC so it would be useless in speeding up the fans... Make sure boot camp is updated

I installed speedfan but it won't pick up the fans.

I haven't used this, but I've read about success of others who did.
