Burned 6750M 512MB replacement

Hypothetically,

Assumed my iMac's GPU burned, and I need to replace it. What GPU would you choose, and why? I mean there are lot of stories that I can put better GPU and enjoy the games and so on, but what about Power Supply, will it be enough watts to feed stronger GPU? And do I need run my fans faster to keep it from burn?

And opposite side, if I just need to got cheapest GPU which will allow me to work on this machine (no games), what will be the best choice?

I had this same machine in today with a bad GPU. Pulled the logic board and used a hot air rework gun on it for about seven minutes (did it slowly) to reflow the solder. Works great now. Just something to consider. The machine runs about $60 on eBay ( you can then resell the machine).

Re-balling is when you take the chip off, clean all of the old solder and then re-apply fresh solder to then remount the chip.

The rub here is the solder Apple (and others) used before 2011 on both the CPU & GPU's had a tendency to breakdown or grow tin whiskers which created a short within the BGA solder pad array.

What the YouTube tech is doing here is reheating the chip to remelt the old solder to fix things. For an older system (pre '11) that can give it a bit more life but the original problem is still present. Oftentimes the solder has decayed into a semi conductive state (crystalized) so the old solder will have the tendency to revert back into the non-conductive state. It's a bit of a gamble ;-} If cost is an issue give it a try.

There are also several, (three, I think) offering both reflow and chip replacement services on eBay. Brickfence has been around for a while.

Thanks for the details, it's interesting, in other words I can give it a shot to reflow (heat it with lighter, heat gun or bake it in oven), but after all it won't fully recover the GPU, and won't be that stable?

What I'm trying to find, that I got a service close by, that told me they can "fix" my GPU for $200-$250, without replacement. I assume they will going with this high temperature process, which I can do at home, in this case case there is no reason to spend cash, right?

As to reflowing: I would focus on the heat gun or as what the tech in the vid shows a small butane torch. Don't try the oven solution as it creates other problems and a cigarette/cigar/pipe lighter is not powerful enough to melt the solder under the chip.

While labor isn't free $200 - $250 for a reflow is the gamble, when you can get a good used GPU unit for $125 AMD Radeon HD 6750M, 512MB

While some people have managed to frankenstein their systems with odd MXM II boards I strongly recommend you stick with the correct parts this system was designed to support. To that end here goes:

  • 661-5944, AMD Radeon HD 6750M, 512MB
  • 661-5945, AMD Radeon HD 6770M, 512MB

These are what your system could be ordered with.

In other words, it won't be safe to install anything else that have higher energy consumption, right?

Well... Its not that simple ;-}

The board will require the correct firmware, The OS would need to have the needed driver to support the graphics board.

And yes, the system would need to supply the added power being used and the would need to have the required cooling so the system doesn't overheat.
