One of my propellers won't stop running.

Hi guys, I am new to this but I am desperate for help..

I have a UDI 818S drone which I have been enjoying right up to today. I had a bit of a rough landing and now one of the props will not stop spinning. All the other three operate perfectly well but the fourth spins at full speed as long as the battery is plugged in, even when the drone is switched off. I have searched around on the internet but can't find anyone with a similar problem, I'm sure it's a switch issue but I would appreciate some help with a diagnosis..

Chris, I don't know where you can get the board, but I see that Pfaff below has steered you to some resources for that.

I had the same problem after the quad hit a wall. I decided to unscrew the bottom before throwing away the quad. I found a broken wire. I resoldered it and the quad work's fine.

If ur wire was the problem ur motor wouldn't spinat all that's not what to him , Chris you have the transistor to that motor burned out , u would have to replace it , when it burns it stay open so the electricity continues on to the motor with out an on and off switch which is the job of the transistor , I had that happen to a few of my toy drones ,

Danny how can i fix it i have the same issue

Part 1 of 2

If you have tools and patience id suggest carefully open it up in a well lighted place in a shallow box lid with white paper sheet base etc.

This way you wont loose the tiny parts.

Take photos to record how it goes back together.

Safely saving those very small screws / parts etc .

Using a high quality magnifying glass and backlight eg torch shone onto the board at an angle, look at the circuit board.

You will see at least 4 FET transistors or similar ( tiny, usually 3 leg black color devices).

Each one drives the motor ie turns it on/off and lets it spin.

Look closely, you may notice one of the transistors ( ie the one driving / closest to your machine's problem motor connection wires)

is deformed shape ( blown open or bulged etc ) .

If not visibly blown then you will need an electronics guy test it and/or to remove it and test it.

If youre lucky , and confirm its the problem root cause device, buyng one and replacing it might fix for < 4USD on e-bay.

Chris, here is the problem with that propeller always running. The motor is driven by what is called a pulse width modulated circuit which simply switches the power on and off, varying the on-time to control speed. The switching drivers are configured in a circuit called an H-bridge. These are basically just transistors of a certain type that switch fast and consume little power on their own, which are arranged to direct the current in the correct amount and direction for each motor.

Here is the bad news. The only way a motor connected to this type of H-bridge can run without being driven by it's intended circuit, is if the transistors are shorted. They could possibly short out if the motor was stalled for a time and the power was still being switched to the motor through the H-bridge. The motor in this case would draw more current than the transistors in the bridge could handle.

The switching absolutely has to occur normally for the motor to possibly run under control. Your drone has a circuit board which contains the four drivers to the four motors. You will have to replace that board because you can't just fix one of the drivers even though the other three work fine. Those big fat wires from each motor lead directly to the driver board making it easy to identify.

Thanks for the speedy response, so to be clear, I need a new circuit board? Do you know if this is readily available and at what cost? I'm a complete newbie.

Many thanks.

@tucks , Chris , Just to add to Damian's good answer, replace the PC board, link #1 below shows a dismantled copter showing the PC board and connectors, etc., and the other links show where the board may be purchased from, You can also do a google search to hopefully get better pricing. You may need the actual part # off the board assy. to be sure you are getting the correct part. Good luck.

I hope this helped you out, if so let me know by pressing the helpful button.

Personally I would work over the board with a soldering iron looking for a cold solder joint. But I'm cheap. Here's how to do that:

Just charged my battery and tried to hook it up but the propellers were going fast even with the power switch off is the switch bad or is the board the culprit? Todd from Va.

I would look at Damians answer above.

Hi Chris and all others who need this info. I build drones of all sort, and I also must repair them when they break. I have crossed paths with this issue and have found, as the top answer suggests, that this is due to a bad transistor/diode on the flight controller. This is a relatively easy fix for those good with smd soldering:

Locate which motor is the one spinning, look on the flight controller or “circuit board” where that particular motor plugs in and locate a three legged diode nearest that motor. Be sure to compare and take notice that each motor has the very same package (dioide) next to it, and with a magnifying glass read the markings on top of the package. This is the part you will need to replace.

If you’ve got old parts just look around and you will be sure to find one you can salvage off of an old board. With a bit of flux and a heat gun, carefully remove the old part.

Once you have the replacement part situated properly on your board, use a soldering iron to touch each leg ever so carefully for a second or two each.

Make sure that each leg has successfully been soldered in place and then use some denatured alcohol to clean your board prior to testing the board out.

If the new part is good, and you’ve done the job correctly, you will see that the motor no longer spins upon connection to the battery.
