This isn't really repair related.

Sterling - If he installs the wrong system and it doesn't work, does it then become a repair question?

That depends your processor, your RAM and your Disk Space: if you have less than 2.5 GB in your HDD, 128 MB of RAM or a 300 MHz processor, forget Win XP or 7 and try Ubuntu or NT 4 or Windows 2000 (but I think that Microsoft doesn't update this OS anymore).

And an advice: forget Windows ME.

My specs are p2 333,6.49GB HDD,195MB of RAM

plus i wouldent buy 7 for it

Windows ME is known for having a lot of bugs (cf: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Me#... ).

Also, you can't launch Win 7 on your PC: it needs 10 GB of free space and 1 GB of RAM at least.

However, you should try Windows 2000: it's the most recent (Feb. 2000 rather than NT4 which is released in '96).

But about Win XP, according to your processor, that may be a little hard (you can try by yourself but that's not a very good idea).

Hello Nick, Here is a link to the Mint web site. You can arrow down to the requirements and see if it will run on your computer. As to Windows ME it was a early mess up like Vista--you don't need those problems. Your computer might run Windows 2000 and if you want to try that I have a copy I will give you. Google win2000 to see if you want to try that but overall I believe you are on the right track with some version of Linux. Good luck, Ralph

its running 98 and it wont mount my 512MB flash drive i keep around for emergencies

さんによる

What about NT?

さんによる

Win 2000 was based on NT and designed for network use. I expect you really need Linux--look for a distro with a small footprint.

I don't think you are going to find a level of performance that is good, for this machine. It is really very old. Even a T30 series laptop would be way faster. Actually my cell phone is faster.

I would forget windows.

Even Xbuntu requires more then you have, even if it doesn't require it in the specs which i am fairly sure it requires 500Mhz or more and 192 MB of RAM for the normal install CD. 256MB of ram is "strongly recommended" per their web site. I don't expect Linux Mint, which is nice, to be any different.

I am running 64bit ubuntu right now, a desktop system, currently using about 800MB of memory.

Look into something like damm small linux (DSL) http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/

or something like it, a very light weight Linux distro meant to be run from USB flash drives or can be installed to the hard drive and packages can be added, as needed, this may require some experienc since DSL and other light weight distros don't have the support the larger distros do.

I don't know what you wish to do with the laptop, it's intended purpose, so I cant say for sure what you should do.

Just for normal everyday computer use with the requirements for Flash, and Java etc just for web browsing today, finding something that will run

"and run fast " is the hard part.

Unless your making it a SIP server with a VOIP gateway for a magic jack or a simple FTP server and a graphical environment isn't even needed, and using command line only.

So XP will suck?

さんによる

The problem with XP is that its overpriced and less secure than Linux.

Your best bet is going to be an extremely lightweight Linux distribution. For ease of use Xubuntu or Mint are great, but may be too much for that machine. Do not try any version of Windows newer than 98, and since you ruled that one out already...looks like you're going Linux!

DSL is great, but can be finicky to install if you're not experienced. You have another option, that would be running Linux from a USB drive. That way you don't have to rely on your laptops hard drive, as the thumbdrive is taking all the slack. Check out PenDriveLinux for options. That link goes straight to the Xubuntu page, but there are other options as well.

I had thought of this before while thinking about this question, a thinkpad of this age would most likely not have an option in the BIOS to boot from USB......I could be wrong...........I think the first thinkpads to boot from USB were the A31 series. (its been a while since i worked with a laptop of this age)......best bet would be picking a lightweight distro he likes and burning to CD.
