No water comes into my icemaker.

I can hear the icemaker "filling" sound, but no water comes through. I took a hair dryer and warmed the plastic tube where the water comes from and removed a cylinder of ice. Thought this would fix it. Nope. I have since put the arm in up position, and haven't had ice for a week. Thanks for any answers.

Question. My icemaker too is not working. These online trouble-shooting sites are great; however, some posts require clarification. For instance, I have 1 water line feed into my refrigerator. The water dispenser works fine but the ice maker is not producing ice. To suggest that the water inlet water valve may be the culprit is somewhat spurious because then wouldn't the Water not dispense as well? Same goes for clogged external ice maker filter: meaning both shouldn't work -- correct?

How can I determine if the ice maker is defective, given the above hypothesis that it's probably not the water inlet valve. How can I test if ice maker needs replacement.

Also, temperature in freezer is sufficient + the line feeder that feeds water to the actual icemaker does not seem frozen.

The water coming out of the Water dispenser is as strong as its always been.

I did recently find a 1/4" thick sheath of ice on the floor inside the freezer, which may also point to a defective Ice Maker, no?

How do you get to the filter and how to take the plastic tube off to check it

さんによる

So what was the fix. Having the exact same problem.

さんによる

Gfrancis M what was your fix? I’m having the same issue.

さんによる

Same problem; Kenmore w/ice maker. Works fine for 6 years. No water getting to ice maker. Changed water filter-have hi pressure from water source to water inlet valve-changed water inlet valve- continuity tested same as old one at 250 ohms. No frozen lines or apparent clogs. Disconnected water line from inlet valve to ice maker and found water was not getting to ice maker from inlet valve (new inlet valve). One point; ice maker was working great and I left the home for 3 weeks and turned off water supply to house, but, left the ice maker arm in the DOWN position, telling it to make ice for 3 weeks with no water supply, but, freezer was on and running and telling ice maker to make ice. Did I burn something out? Another point; I can pour water into the tray and ice cubes will be kicked out normally. That part of the ice maker seems to be working--I just can't get water to the ice maker.

Of course when the arm is up, it thinks the ice bin is full and stops making ice. But the real problem is most likely the:

Water Inlet Valve

The water inlet valve is an electrically-controlled valve that opens to supply water to the dispenser and ice maker. If the water inlet valve is defective, or if it has insufficient pressure, it won’t allow water to flow through. As a result, the ice maker won’t make ice. The valve requires at least 20 psi to function properly. Make sure that the water pressure to the valve is at least 20 psi. If the water pressure is sufficient, use a multimeter to check for power to the water inlet valve. If the water inlet valve has sufficient pressure and is getting power, but the ice maker won’t fill with water to make ice, replace the water inlet valve.

It was helpful, but... I'm a housewife and don't know a thing about 20 psi. I guess I have to have a special tool to check this, and I have no idea how to check it. Regardless, if I had the proper tools, I thinks this would be an appropriate answer. Thanks.

psi is pounds per square inch. It refers to your water pressure. If you have not changed the filter in a while, it may be blocked up and restricting the flow and pressure.

さんによる

I’ll change the filter, but the light is green, and it was changed a few months ago. Filters are cheap, repairman are not.

Make sure the plastic water line is not frozen up.

I replaced water inlet valve water still does not go to the ice maker

Do you have a saddle valve (the one that perforated the copper pipe) for your ice maker/water dispenser in you fridge?

if you do, replace the saddle valve for a t-valve. Done.

I went through replacing the inlet water valve and the ice maker itself for nothing. Those saddle valves are garbage. They don’t let enough water reach the fridge with the needed pressure. It took me 4 year to figure it out!

Good luck!

Where is this saddle valve that needs to be replaced? I have a Kenmore elite French door.

さんによる

The saddle valve is on the main water line. Probably in the basement. Behind the fridge the line goes through the floor and down to the saddle valve.

さんによる

@Todd Cox Gonna need to dumb it down for me, no idea what a saddle valve & the other kind of valve?

さんによる

the valve that hooked up to your main waterline of the house. Follow the line from your fridge and should lead to it.

さんによる

A saddle valve clamps onto an existing water line and when engaged pierces a hole in the existing line to access the water supply. The Tee valve is installed in the existing water supply line giving a new connection outet.

If you don’t have a freezing issue with your fridge, check that the water pressure is strong enough.

The problem I had was the valve that comes with the puncturing feature that didn’t let the water run at full pressure. Once I replaced the valve with a compression one, my problem was fixed and ice started to be made at good speeds

Where is the valve located?

さんによる

I fix it by taking out the lower plastic cover of the icemaker and you will find a water disposable bottle and just knoking hard the electric valve and it opens the valve and the water came out yheeey !!!

Before checking valves, water pressure and other stuff, try the following:

Reset a Kenmore Ice Maker

Remove the front plate that covers the ice maker. The cover plate should come off with a simple tug. Find the on and off switch on the front of the ice maker's PC board and turn the machine off. Unplug the refrigerator and wait five minutes before plugging it back in.

Turn the ice maker back on and return the cover plate. Close the freezer and allow the machine to cycle through and fill ice trays before further troubleshooting.

Thanks to this website, I’m able to produce ice again.

I just found this post and have a kenmore elite that is driving me crazy. Water dispenses with good force. Ice maker will dispense water and dump a few batches of ice but then water stops filling ice maker. I have put in new ice maker, new water inlet valve at bottom back of fridge and replaced what looks like another valve located inside bottom of left door. I

have also put in new filter and tried the blow dryer on the line. Nothing has worked. Please help

Hi @yankeefan1

What is the model number of the refrigerator?

@David Biegert ,

Check, if possible, if the ice container in the ice maker is in the horizontal position. According to the service manual for the refrigerator water will only enter when it is in this state. See p.32. There is also an icemaker test function described on p.34 Section 8-2-5.

Have you checked if the “ice” water valve (as opposed to the dispenser water valve) is working OK?

There is a wiring diagram on p.25 showing where the ice valve connects to on the main pcb. Since the water dispenser works OK, the pilot valve must be OK also as usually it takes 2 valves to operate to supply water i.e. pilot valve + water valve to the dispenser and pilot valve + ice valve to the ice maker.

If you find a faulty part there’s a parts list at the end of the manual. Search online using the part number only to get results for suppliers that suit you best.

Thank you. I'm going to try all of these things, but first where is the "test" button referred to in the manual. I have felt all around the ice maker and can't find it.

@David Biegert

Here's an image of the of the icemaker where it shows the switch or at least I think it is anyway.

Select the smaller image on the right under the main image to see the underside of the icemaker and then hover and zoom on the main image and I think it is on the left side with the arrow pointing to it.
