Why can't it power on?

So I bought an oem video capturing device from China and it stopped working after a power surge. I've tried other adapters but the device just won't turn on. It is still working as it can receive power from its USB port but I think the board related to the power input or something fried. I'm not good in this so I was wondering if anyone has an idea of what I should do..

Hi,

Is it still being detected by a PC when you plug it in? In Windows you should get a notification that a device has been plugged in. Also check in Start > Control Panel > Device Manager to see if it is listed after you plug it in.

If you are not getting this or it is not there then there is a fair chance that the USB controller in the device is not working. Also it would probably cost you more to get it repaired , even if that were possible, than to buy a new one.

The USB port is actually for output, so it wouldn't work if I connect it to a computer, it was meant for connecting USB storage only, it's kinda weird that it can still get power through the port though.

So the device plugs into a TV for example or some other sort a video device and the signals come through the USB port into the PC and using the software associated with the capture device to record the video. Is this the way it works? If so then unless the device has its own separate power supply input, then the device receives its power from the USB port supply provided by the PC. USB connections use 4 wires: Vcc, data +ve, data -ve, and Ground The Vcc and ground wires supply the power for the device and the data wires are used to transfer information using the USB protocol. If the device powers on but there is no data transfer then the USB controller in the device must be faulty. The PC should recognize the device when it is plugged in if the controller in the device is working because the PC has to load the correct drivers (provided by the software which came with the capture device - they would have been installed when you installed the capture software in the PC) so that there will be a working connection established between the PC and the device.

Thank you very much for the reply, I just realized there's a software that came together with the device but I haven't tried it...

Ah nvm..it's just a video editing software..Guess I'm doomed haha

Hi,

Are you sure? I assume you're basing that on the fact that you have installed it and the capture device is still not working.

I'm saying that because with some digital cameras for example (panasonic is one I definitely know of) the drivers get installed when you load the camera software that came with the camera. It is not a separate install.
