iMac Intel 2133 Logic Board Replacement

I bought the logic board from ifixit and followed all the instructions from this guide

iMac Intel 20" EMC 2133 and 2210 Logic Board Replacement

In the end, I realize the logic board I bought contains fewer components than my imac's logic board.

The top pic is my imac logic board, bottom is what I bought from ifixit

Now I'm stuck. Help! I need another guide to transfer the rest of components of my logic board to the new logic board

Before you go through all this please tell us why you think the logic board failed. Actual failed logic boards are very rare, most likely issue on your machine is the inverter, next the GPU.

Thanks for your reply.

I was working on the iMac when the screen suddenly went black. Tried to restart, heard the hard disk working , USB mouse has light on, but the screen was black. Went to a local repair shop, they said it's probably a logic board problem but they didn't have the parts. So I tried to fix it myself.

If it is the inverter or GPU problem, may I know how to fix it, thanks:)

OK, @sookyee . #1, it's very rarely the logic board.

Let's try to figure out what the problem is before just throwing money at it.

Try booting up and observe the diagnostic lights to the right of the RAM slots and tell me what you observe. To do that you need to remove the frame, here's how:

iMac Intel 20" EMC 2133 and 2210 Front Bezel Replacement

LED 1 - Indicates that the trickle voltage from the power supply is detected by the main logic board. This LED will remain ON while the iMac is connected to the AC power. The LED will remain on even when the computer has been shut down or put to sleep. The LED will turn off only if the AC power is disconnected or the power supply is faulty.

LED 2 - Indicates that the main logic board has detected proper power from the power supply when the computer is turned on. This LED will be ON when the computer is turned on and the power supply is working correctly.

LED 3 - Indicates that the computer and the video card are communicating. This LED will be ON when the computer is communicating properly with the video card. If LEDs 1 and 2 are ON and you heard the startup sound, but LED 3 is OFF, then the video card might be installed incorrectly or need replacement.

LED 4 - Indicates that the computer and the LCD display panel are communicating. This LED will be ON when the computer is turned on and video signal is being generated. If the LED is ON and there is no image on the LCD display panel, the LCD display panel or inverter might be installed incorrectly or need replacement.

@mayer Thanks for your reply

I put back the old logic board to the iMac and followed your instructions

LED 1,2,3 are on but 4 isn't,

Here's the pic

And there isn't any startup sound when it boot. But the left fan is moving and I heard the harddisk working.

OK looks like the logic board may be good. Next, to test The video card (GPU) hook up an external monitor and tell what you get. Also shine a flashlight at an angle to the screen and see if you can discern the desktop.

Also zap the PRAM and see if you get your start up tone back. Here's how:

Shut down your machine. Yes, all the way down, not sleep or logging out.

Press the power button and then press command-option-p-r. ...

Hold those keys down until your Mac reboots again and you here the startup chime.

Let go of the keys and let your Mac reboot normally.

@mayer

I press the power button and press command option P, R

but there is no startup sound, just the left fan is moving. LED123 lights on and some sound coming from the right.

May I know how to hook up video card with external monitor? I only have an old MacBook Pro with me, can I use as external monitor?

Thanks

There is a video port on the back, you need the correct adapter and may have to borrow a monitor to run the test. How did the flash light test come out?

@mayer

Sorry for this late reply.

I found an external monitor and hook the video port with a vga cable to the vga port of the external monitor but there is no signal.

I shined a flashlight at an angle to the screen but it is all black.

As usual, there is no startup chime, just the fan is moving and the 1st 3 led lights on

Hi Sook,

From the photo it looks like you have exactly the same logic boards, but there are some additional components on your old board that are probably sold separately, thus it looks like the boards are not the same.

IMO it is not a complicated task to move the extra parts to the new board, I can't see any soldering required, just removing a few screws and re-attaching the parts to the exact same location on the new board. Worths giving it a try.

If you don't feel comfortable doing it by yourself, take both parts to a computer technician, they will probably do it for you in minutes.

Good luck
