Severe water damage. Anything that can be done?

Hi folks, I jumped in a pool with my new iphone 6s in my pocket.

Immediately put it in rice for 4 to 5 days then had someone open it. Logic board corroded and other places too. He told me that it heated up when he switched it on. He gave it back to me but it does not power on at all.

I really don't want to leave this as it is. I've read the starting points, but cannot find anything specific to iphone 6s on water damage.

Is there anything that you all could tell me about this situation before I try to salvage the phone by replacing the logic board?

Hi,

As you know water and electronics and electricity are not a good mix.

The water causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the phone's operating design and could damage the components.

While rice is good to eat it does nothing to fix the problems caused by corrosion

Don't Put Your Device in Rice. Here's Why...

First do not turn on your phone and then you need to remove the battery as soon as possible from the phone to minimize further damage.''

Then you need to dis-assemble the rest of the phone and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 90%+ to remove all traces of corrosion and water. Do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is only 70% and is not as effective. If you do check the label to verify the amount

Here is a link that in general, describes the process.

Electronics Water Damage

You will probably have to replace the battery as it is very hard to recover a battery from water damage.

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted PCBs be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the board.

Hopefully after you have done all this the phone might possibly work correctly again.

Here is a link to the ifixit guide(s) for repairing your phone.

iPhone 6s

If this process seems too daunting, take your phone to a reputable, professional phone repair service and ask for a quote for a repair. If you decide to do this, do it sooner than later.

Beat me to it again! Good answer.

Sheer coincidence. I'm certainly not racing. Besides which water damage answers are fairly standard. Just mention that Rice is a bad idea and give cleaning instructions and model teardown info if possible.

Just saw this as I was posting. Great answer and nailed it.

Water got into my pocket and the iphone, I saw it behind the display. I turned it off immediately. In two weeks (I did not have the pentalobe screwdriver) I replaced the battery. There is no corrosion visible in the phone, but the water signal button is red. The phone seems to be able to get to DFU, restore and computer see it. However, sometimes the computer says the device is not recognizable. I restored it from icloud using iTunes, but the biggest problem is that display does not work.

However, it does not look the display is the only thing when the phone tends to discconnect and windows says unrecognizable device. Any ideas? Does it make sense to give it a try and replace the display, only?

First to start, despite everything you've read online , avoid putting any electronic device in rice after liquid damage. Rice does absolutely nothing beneficial to liquid damage repair.

In short corrosion is the breakdown of left behind impurities found in water/liquid. Many of these impurities left on your board cover traces and are conductive..forming new paths that weren't intended to be there during production. These paths can direct current straight to ground damaging other components in its way...aka short to ground. Rice will not in any way clean up and remove corrosion.

Best thing to do is as quickly as you can disassemble or have someone do so to the device and run it through an ultra sonic. If you don't have an ultrasonic 91% or 99% isopropyl alcohol will remove most of the corrosion. Let the board dry (about an 1 or so) and attempt to power on.

If you can I strongly recommend letting it run through a decent ultrasonic cleaner to remove corrosion under chips and areas you can't get with a soft toothbrush. Without removing all the corrosion every-time you power the device on you risk damaging more of the board.

New battery and possibly screen might be needed as well. Hopefully this helps a little.
