Touch ID fails to setup after disassembling iPhones with iOS 10.0.2

Hello, I was disassembling several iPhones (my included and an iPhone of a friend) both are iPhones 6 with 128GB. I replaced twice the display of the iPhone 6 of my friend, and everytime it worked properly. Same was done with my iPhone. Then today I had to open both iPhones. And after assembling them again, the Apple TouchID sensor (which are original and not swapped) were not functioning anymore. Both iPhones tell me "Failed Unable to Complete Touch ID Setup", I already did all the tricks. Reset, Hard-Reset, iTunes downgrade to iOS 9.3.5 (from both 10.0.2).

After all things didnt work and the Touch ID fails, I have a bad thought, that Apple did something in iOS 10.0.2 which prevents the Touch ID to work after the iPhone was disassembled. Something like in the past with the Error53… I hope someone can prove me wrong and help me out with the issue by providing a trick how to reset the Touch ID and complete the Touch ID Setup.

Double check the home button extension cable and home button to see if they are connected properly.

Otherwise if home button does work but not touchID try doing an update in recovery mode and if that still does not work reset network settings.

The home button extension cable going bad could be a possibility too. Or at worse the home button cable was damaged.

Hello Ben! Thank you very much for the information. I did anything you wrote already. And both buttons work, but not touch id, which actually does hint at something Apple changed in iOS 10.0.2 and not a cable damage. Also the possibility that both iPhones were damaged at the same time is much unlikely.

I will try the recovery mode update and then tell you what happened. And I will reset the network settings again.

さんによる

Ok, it did not the trick. I wonder if this may have an impact, when unpluging the sensor whilst iPhone is running?

さんによる

Yes, unplugging anything while the battery is connected is a bad idea, unplugging it while the phone is running is begging to fry something.

さんによる

are you sure you didn't accidently swap the home buttons?

The iOS version is not an issue with this. Most likely, the touchID chip was shorted out when the flex was disconnected with the battery still attached. You can try replacing the long home flex (which can sometimes be the culprit) but I don't think that will solve your issue. Once that chip is damaged, it's not coming back.

I replaced the TouchID long home button flex cable and that fixed the TouchID.

I have the same problem when I change battery on 5s. Problem was when turn on phone and was shown message "unable to activate id touch on this phone". Then I thought that touch ID cable is damaged or Touch ID is broken. But when I turn on charger I found that phone doesn't charging just showing lightning icon, also speaker not work. Then I undersdand that something is badly connected. Again removed phone screen and disconnected battery connection. Then reconected connector near battery connector. Then turn on phone, and message "unable to activate id touch on this phone" did not show up. Also phone speaker and battery charging works fine!

Could you have forgotten to reconnect the Touch ID ribbon cable while putting the phone back together after the replacement?

I opened the phone and unplugged, then replugged the sensor. Everything appears to be plugged in right.

I replaced the home button flex ribbon cable. All is well after restoring the phone. TouchID works.

I felt the home button flex cable connector "snap" into place solidly. That was reassuring.

The next reassuring event as not seeing the immediate "TouchID cannot be activated on this iPhone" message immediately after powering the phone on.

I was of the understanding that the home button flex was chipped/encrypted/married to the logic board and Touch ID would not work if it was replaced?

さんによる

James Miller, what has this to do with "TouchID cannot be activated on this iPhone" after updating from iOS 9 to 10. It failed to work immediately after upgrading to iOS 10. It worked perfectly before update. In my mind it has to be a software issue.

さんによる

I still don't get it. Worked before the update and failed after the update. Nothing else done with the phone. Why would the flex cable be damaged after upgrade?

Did you purchase the screen replacement kit from IFixIt? If you did you might have purchase the option thag doesn't come with the conductive plate. Without that platells Touch ID will not work.

I did move over that little mental plate as part of the fix. I do believe it makes a difference.

Frank: Two things.... NO there is no Problem with touch IDs and IOs softwares.... and yes there is a flex damage..

try this...

1.open both phones, remove both lcd. (disconnect battery)

2.now u have two lcd and will work only in one phone (the other one put to the side with out screen)

3.now time to troubleshoot. in the one phone you decided to work on. plug in the others phone lcd.

(plug in everything... lcd, dig, long home flex, proximity

4. plug in battery, and turn it on... (see if it worked)(your done)

5. if did not worked on the same screen that is connected (swap only home button and do step 4.)

6. if it dint work still, on that lcd long home button flex is damaged.. now use the second lcd.

7.second lcd has no home button bc u removed it, connect any of the two home button and do step 3 and 4.

8. if didn't work, with that same second lcd do step 5.

9.. do same thing with the other phone u put aside on step 2.

-----------

expert explanation:

test out both home botton flex (long one) and both home botton with each phone.

if doesn't work both long home button flex are damaged. (wort case home button is damage)

add: go to setting --- touch id---see if gives u error.

What model iPhone is this? If it is an iPhone 6, Then I would bet dollars to donuts they damaged the backplate flex cable that connects the home button to the motherboard. This cable is very sensitive in most cases your home button will still function but the touch ID will stop working if this cable has been damaged at all.

Replacing the back plate with touch ID flex cable will 99% of the time correct this problem.

You can't open the iPhone to unplug the battery without unplugging the Touch ID first... same goes for plugging in the battery and Touch ID.

So basically, apart from the 'dust free' part, your reply is rubbish. You're welcome ;)

さんによる

Thats only with the iPhone 5s .. i believe he is talking about the iPhone 6/6s which doesnt need to be unplugged before battery

I was having this problem until I swapped out the Home button flex cable, the one attached to the metal backplate. I pulled one out of a spare donor iPhone 6, transplanted it, took care to ensure that everything was seated secure, straight, and without any excessive/uncomfortable force. After hooking the screen assembly back up and THEN reattaching the battery plug, I started the phone up and, hallelujah, no more error about touch ID. :)

Hi everyone, I see from your discussion that this kind of error is due to a bad reassembling of the phone. This makes me very angry since the iPhone started to suffer of this problem after coming back from maintanance (for another problem). Do you guys think that they may have bad disassembled my iPhone? I never opened it, nor jailbroken.

Thanks for any suggestion, anyway tomorrow I will come back to the maintanance center and say two or three kind words to them. And of course, eventually I will let you know what answer they will give me.

ALWAYS remember with the iPhone 6 and 6s once open, disconnect battery first! Before you disconnect anything else for repair or you will more than likely damage or have a non responsive component.

If any case have non responsive component after not disconnecting battery, remove ribbon for repaired/new component then remove battery ribbon.. you can now plug new component ribbon back in then last rhe battery and you should be good to go ..
