Suggestion for good preheat station for ipad, phone

Hi,

Doe anyone have experience and suggestion for a good preheat station to use to ease separation of iPad glass, glueing of xperia screens etc. I am now using a heat gun and have read it is much better with a heating plate. I have some but I guess it is important that it can fit a large iPad.

Thank you for linking the second preheat station, the last time I looked for it I could only find it at about $70 USD.

Ahh...the old heat gun vs hot plate argument! This is a question that each tech will feel differently about. I have personally done replacement screens on hundreds (thousands?) of iPads using a heat gun. I like being able to control which part of the screen gets heated up. Also, usually the iPad will cool down before you get all the way around. That means a hot plate will actually take make longer since you have to keep reheating the device.

The short answer is: Do what works for you. I love my heat guns and would never give them up. To me, technique is much more important than the tool in this case. Some techs will swear that their hot plates are better than any heat gun out there. Use whichever one allows you to work the fastest while delivering the best quality.

And buy some D-Limonene to get the glue off. Trust me on this one.

About that D-Limonene, safety directions say to avoid contact with skin, I'm guessing I should treat this stuff like handling 100% pure isophryl alcohol.

its no problem. The stuff is the safest thing I have on my chemical shelf.

@Josh W I agree with you that for iPads I have no problem with using a heat gun. I can pry the glass slowly up and follow the opening with a heat gun so it slowly goes off in one piece. I also fix Sony Xperia screens and have unfortunately heated up too much of the LCD/glass (which is fused). I have started to use original transparent adhesive that requires heat. This works much better than the black cold adhesive. But using a heat gun in this process is very risky as the Sony screens are extremely sensitive to heat. And for the iPad I agree with you that it may take longer time with a heat plate since the iPad will have cooled down before I get around the screen. Maybe I should have posted this in the Xperia devices.

And yes it is a question of technique to learn. I have learned that it is better with lower heat and being patient (2-3 minutes) instead of blasting off with great heat. The iPads seem to to take much more heat than the Sony screens (or any phone screen compared to a tablet screen)

iPad Mini glass isn't attached to the LCD. If we are talking about OCA applications, that's a whole different story. In that case, a hot plate is required for separation and a laminating machine is required for for reassembly. I have an iPhone 6+ screen baking in mine as we speak.

In my shop, we use a food dehydrator. You can adjust the temperature and have multiple things in it. Set it at 155 degrees and you're good to go. Here is a nice one that you could look at. http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/32221571596...

Food dehydrator?? Really. Unbelievable since I never thought about that. So how does it work? You just put in the ipad? But then the whole ipad warms up to 155 degrees (Farenheit?). Is that good for the ipad? I also need to warm up e.g. Xperia phone where I put a weight for pressure on the screen so it sits. Will that work?

With the adjustable temp, it makes it super easy to use. We have it set at 150-155 degrees and set the time. It doesn't hurt the device at all as a whole. It helps because whatever device you have in there stays hot while you're taking off the screen as opposed to cooling down quickly.
