Need to replace the sound card for the x555LA. Which sound card is compatible and has the integrated USB port and 3.5 jack?

The 3.5 jack is close to the sound board but is not part of the board itself. If the X555HD board is defective, both the earphone and speakers will not work! The sound driver will not install after that because the software can't see the fried chip on the board and the speaker on the taskbar will have a red X by it.

The small board is called an X555LD Board and also controls the hard drive. The Realtek sound Chip is also on this board and has died. You will need to order a new one. Price on eBay is $30-$65 for the board but if you know how to use a hot air soldering iron then the actual Realtek Chips and only a few dollars and you can do it yourself for much less. Or maybe you can take the new chip and board to a shop and get a technician to do it? There is a known issue with this model and thousands had this same issue! My belief is that the sound chip is too small to drive the speakers and heats up and eventually dies quickly? There are several revisions of this board so make sure you get the correct revision that fits your ASUS laptop. You can get to the board by removing the screws on the bottom of the laptop. With the laptop facing up and prying the silver plastic top away from the black plastic bottom section, the board is kind of "L" shaped on the bottom right hand side of the laptop. The headphone jack is close to the board but is not on it. You also need to be careful lifting the top off because there are two buss cables that are hard to get back on if they are pulled on to hard. There is enough room to take the old X555LD board and put a new one in if you are careful. Time is about 30 minutes if you take your time and are being careful! Difficulty is about a 3 out of 10, not that hard. There are only 3-4 tiny screws to removing that board. It's always good to mark were the old screws went with a felt tip pen because there are extra holes on this board that aren't used and you want to get the screws back into the same holes too!

Dear Michael James,

I had the same problem as described above. As you recommended, I have ordered a new soundcard and replaced in my laptop. Unfortunately there is no change. There is no sound on the internal speakers, neither on the earphones. Windows 10 says "No audio output device is installed". I tried to reinstall the driver, etc.

Is there any suggestion? Maybe there is something wrong on the mainboard?

Kind Regards,

David

Hi,

i don't know that model very well, but most of the time the sound card is integrated on the main board ( on board)..

You say the integrated usb and 3.5 jack do you mean a seperate main board? like i sayed i cant find a picture of the hole main board.

Kind regards

Kevin

The sound card is integrated with a 3.5 jack and a usb port, but it is a separate component from the motherboard. It sits on top of the motherboard, with the port and jack on the right side of the machine.

if its a seperate pcb , it can be replaced. only you have to search on the net where you can buy it. or seek for an second hand model with broken parts ( other than the sound pcb) and replace it. or try to contact the manufacturer, maybe they can send you a pcb ( but most of the time their prices are high)

Dont know if you have this sorted but I have the same problem. I’ve tried everything apart from replacing the soundcard itself. I have an external soundcard instead which works and sounds much better, you can pick one up for about £50-£100. You can get ones a lot more expensive but that is more for music prodution. You would need to buy speakers too, but in the long run (if you plan on sticking with the laptop) it would work out better than changing the soundcard everytime it burns out.

I bought a new sound board and it seemed to work intermittently. I’m usuing Window 7 but the laptop came with Windows 8.1 on it. I’m beginning to think it might be a Windows 7 driver compatibility issue. I’m going to install Windows 10 to find out because when I remove the drivers, then reinstall them it seems to work sometimes, but intermittently. That would seem to rule out that it is a hardware problem. If it was the sound board, I think it would stay broken, and I bought a new board too - same problem, after a few reboots. Also I bought a little USB 2.0 external sound cord if updating to Windows 10 doesn’t work. Below is the laptops sound board and it is very easy to remove. The bottom image is a new external USB sound card, if all else fails! It is only about $10.00 on Amazon. But you will have to connect it to some small speakers too. (Not pictured)

I had same issue in X555L of Asus. I added the legacy hardware and my problem is resolved.

Go to Action on Device manager. Click add legacy hardware. Click on Search for and Install automatically. Select the Audio Manufacturer as Microsoft and enjoy.

Does this board controll also the USB port that is next to the headphone jacks? Because on my computer neither work. I was thinking of opening the computer to see if there was something disconnected, but if it’s got something to do with the chip itself I don’t believe I can fix it without a replacement

No the USB port is controlled by another board. Your USB Port could be a blown chip or a broken port, or both! Look closely at the port and years of inserting the USB plug may have damaged it? If that is the case, you could have just a damaged USB port, or the USB controller chip is also blown? This is not an easy fix and it would be time to get a new laptop because the repair cost would be too high to fix it and you would still have an old computer.
