Possible to extract data from water damaged phone? Location of LCI's?

Hi,

A friend of mine's iPhone 6 took a dip in water. She took it to a repair center. They extracted the data from it, but told her it's not repairable.

To start with; is it possible to extract data from a non-functioning water damaged phone? If the phone won't turn on (and is not repairable), how is it possible to extract the data from it?

Second, I opened it up to try to see where the liquid contact indicators are, in an attempt to see if they might have switched out the board for another non-working one. (My reasoning: if the LCIs on the board are not red, this would mean this isn't her board).

I was only able to find the one behind the SIM card tray, and it is red.

Anyone know where the others are?

Thanks!

It is NOT possible to dump data without powering on the phone and putting in the passcode, unless the user has icloud enabled and the data has been backed up automatically.

The other LCI is at the top end of the board.

Thanks for the reply, Tom.

I just asked her, apparently they called her to ask for the passcode. So obviously the phone powered up. This might sound far-fetched, but is it at all possible to replace / swap some components with another functioning iPhone, to be able to power up the phone / gain access to the data?

Also, I've attached below a picture of the phone. The SIM card LCI is obvious. I cannot seem to locate the one at the top of the board. Could you pinpoint to where it should be?

Thanks again!

EDIT: I attached the image to my initial post

My theory is that they simply cleaned the board and did some basic repairs so the phone can boot. They did not replace any core components like the CPU or the flash memory.

The second LCI is simply missing.

But then how come, when she received the phone, it longer boots? Is it at all possible (as could it be done) to take out the flash memory and install it in a working iPhone 6, so they can extract data?

さんによる

No. Each flash memory must be paired with its CPU to load data. Otherwise it is not possible to decrypt any data.

Sorry for being incessant here; just trying to understand the whole picture. Is it then possible to place the CPU and the flash memory in another functioning phone? Also, do you have any theories as to why they were able to boot up her phone but when she received the phone, it no longer boots up? Thanks a lot Tom, appreciated!
