Why isn´t my screen working?

Hi there,

2 days ago i started "repairing" my macbookpro by changing the drive (new ssd-drive, Samsung MZ-7TE120BW 840 EVO Basic(6,4 cm (2,5 Zoll) (120GB, 256MB Cache, SATA III), 2 gb additional ram (QUMOX @ 2GB DDR2 667MHz PC2-5400 PC2-5300 (200 PIN) SODIMM) and a new battery.

I think all the parts are compatible, because i used Google! :)

The Change of battery went well (hooray, easy one), the drive and ram Exchange didn´t:

After following the complete guide through drive and ram Exchange and Tuning the macbook on again i got a blackscreen. Power is on, DVD is working, bootable System DVD (?) inserted, no Screen.

Trivial mistake?

Do i Need to prepare the new drive first? or is a bootable usb-stick necessary? Or did something during the repair go wrong? The whole process was fine i think, no broken connections, i think i went through it very carefully.

If it isn´t that trivial (like booting or preparing something), what should i check if reopening the macbook again is needed?

I do recommend you fall back to the original config and alter one thing at a time as you may have put in something that is not working.

You will need a bootable drive of some sort to prep your new SSD. But you do have a few issues here before you can do that! I would recommend you put back your original HD into the system and work it from there following the steps here:

  • You will likely need to upgrade the systems firmware. Follow this Apple T/N to check your system: About EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Mac computers.
  • Given the age of your system your OS choices is limited here to Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.8. You'll either need to use your Grey recovery CD/DVD the system came with or you'll need to order it from Apple: Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.8. Download the installer onto your current HD so you can then run it to prep your new SSD.
  • You will also need a FireWire case and cable to hold your SSD and attach it to your system so you can then prep it.

Use Disk Utility to create a GUID partition map & create a journaled file system partition. Then run the OS installer following the its instructions. At the end it will also you if you want to migrate the user accounts, apps & data over to the new drive I would recommend you do.

Now the rub! Are you sure you want to invest into this system? This system is no longer supported by Apple and parts are getting hard to find. The OS is also quite limiting as far as any new apps as it can't support them. Web browsing is risky as the security holes are not being patched. Lastly, this system has a known issue with its graphics chip so you maybe on borrowed time here.

I should also point out not many people have tried putting in SSD's into this system so I can't promise it will work reliably. You see this is a SATA I (1.5 Gb/s) system and while the SSD you are putting in does have auto sense SATA port technology I'm not sure it works in this system.

It maybe time to think about getting a newer system (new or used).

It was the ram extension. When i put back the old ram (1gb) screen was on again. Installing on the new ssd got quite easy after booting via usb. But i still don't get why the ram addition (1gb+2gb) gave me a blackscreen and doesn't work...

I thought the a1150 modell could handle 3gb, or, if ram's not accepted, would ignore it...?

Sorry didn't catch it, no-go with the RAM. This systems Max is 2 GB (two 1 GB modules).
