Xbox 360 will only read DVDs
Disc player Was recently changed by the previous owner and now we cannot figure out why it won't read any games. I was told that it had to be synchronized, but couldn't find how to do it. please help!

From the ifixit teardown, very last step, the motherboard and drive are "married" meaning that if you replaced the drive which it seems like you have, but kept your old motherboard, your SOL. I have looked but have yet to find any ways to "marry" a new drive to an old motherboard.

Sounds like a dying Disk Drive Laser. Not much you can do here besides try to clean the lens with the proper DVD Drive lens cleaners (bestbuy or newegg.com)
You may need to replace the drive. Try ebay for some parts for this older version XBOX.
The previous owner may have done something wrong during the installation I would do a teardown and see if you can find anything out of the norm if you have the experience to do so.

you need to pull the info from the firmware of the old drive and put it into the new drive...
this only works if the drive your replacing is exactly the same make and model as the old drive.
if you search onlnie about replacing xbox 360 cdrom drives it will guide u to some info on how to do this..
Its not exactly easy and you need specific hardware in order to accomplish this but it is certianly possible.

As the others have mentioned, you will be SOL if the previous owner has already thrown out the old drive. If they haven't, you will need to get it from them and extract the drive key from it.
The new drive DOES NOT have to be the same make/model as the old one (unless you are just going to swap the logic boards, an easier fix).
You can "Spoof" the old firmware and key to a new drive, essentially making the 360 think your new Benq drive is really the old Samsung (or whatever make/model it used to be).
Also speaking from experience, over 100 drives replaced.

download the game into your harddrive then open and close your cd drive bout 3 timesthen go to your games press play on it most likley it will play
